A trip down memory lane

Never had a 50......my first bike was a CB200.....awful thing, kept it 3 weeks then swapped it for a GT250M.Seemed like a good idea at the time but needed a new crank......which also turned out to include a rebore......tough times for an apprentice on £30 a week

Ta, feel the noise! It's my old kh250 that I fitted a 400 engine into-had the frame nickel plated & a few odds&ends chromed :P

I was 16 August 1973
Ditched the pushbike and got a blue Honda SS50.
Yellow centurion open face with dark blue visor couldn't see a thing at night :)
I was the youngest of the gang by 2-3 months so mine was M reg and there's were L reg.

A year earlier you could have had a 250 and no crash helmet, still we got into enough bother on the 50's.

In the gang we had
Blue SS50
Red SS50
Yellow Puch ( maxi I think not sure) complete with yellow 6' whip arial
Garelli tiger cross
gold Fs1e
Gilera touring

The Garelli was the fastest and noisiest but fell apart had the frame welded every week and totally unreliable.
The Puch was the joke of the pack.
The 4 strike Hondas were the slowest  but could still hit 50 if you got a mile long hill to go down,
laying flat out on tank, knees and elbows tucked in feet on passenger footrests.
Borrow 50p off your granny to fill up with petrol.
Crap tyres fell off on every roundabout when it rained

Ah memories :)
My 1st moped was a 1975 Gilera trial (passed down from my brother)
Then I got a 1976 Honda SS50 with a yellow tank and black top box.

Bought my Purple FS1E new for £199 in 1974 just before I turned 16.
On my Birthday, got up, done my paper round on it then rode to school.
Off my pushbike and then onto a 50mph sports moped........those were the days. :D

Thanks for the memories Darren.

Everyone I went to school with had an FS1E, or SS50!

So I bought a KTM Comet (aka Vomit) Cross, and for the same reason my best mate bought a Gilera Sport just to be different!

This also sounded better:-

Nice Rob

I graduated from my Fizzy, to an RD250 which I then transplanted a RD400 engine ! Then the LC and YPVS came before I went 4 stroke with a Z1 , wish I still had them all to be honest, but then I only just parted with a GPZ 900. A1 I bought in 1984 ! Because I didn't ride it .

I posted this pic on my FB wall and the nostalgia has come back there too! 2 of my mates has FS1E's from the 70's when I had an AR80 in 1982 when I was 17, I also remember one of the lads had a Suzuki 50 ( AP? ) looked a bit sporty to us, we thought we were the bees knees 8) :D

Does anyone remember the FANTIC CABALERRO (I think that's the spelling) from that mid / late 70's era? 50cc trial bike, not restricted at the time when they had just started to bring that in, so they changed hands for loadsamoney then :)

They were in high demand when I was that age because they would scream there way up to almost 60 mph under the right conditions :) I dread to think what a good be would be worth now.

SS50 Honda
AP50 Suzuki
AE50 Kawasaki

I had a mate with a FS1E at school. I used to beat him everywhere..... :D

I had a push bike.
His FS1E was faster than the Honda Mopeds though.

My mate had a FC chopper, it had a large fishtail exhaust and smoked like a pig. He lived about 1/2 a mile from me and I could hear him start it and ride over to my house, it was so gutless, it took ages to get up to speed.
