A trip down memory lane...

Hey guys, in light of the new Z4 pictures being out there and getting our first proper impression I was wondering what your very first impression was of the current Z4. In the flesh or in a brochure before launch back in the heady days of 2002 / 2003.

In my case back in 2003 (I remember it well) I was at a local BMW stealership in Spain and the sales guy showed me the brochure for the new model coming out, the Z4. The thing that I remember the most was the rear lights, they had that Ferrari look. At the time I couldn't afford one but I remember liking the styling, interior and wanting one and here I am a few years later driving and enjoying mine!!!

What about you guys, what do you remember about the first time you saw one, how did the love start? :driving:

To be honest, when the Z4 first came out as a roadster I didn't even notice it! Saw it in the press but didn't bother going to see it (I actually thought of it as a "hairdressers car!" lol).

Only when the Coupe came out did I think Wow! I only saw the Coupe in the showroom first before I saw any photos and I must admit it looked better in the metal. This is why I am reserving real judgement on the new one. Mind you, the more I look at the pics the more I am starting to like it!

I had my name on the list at the Sheffield dealer about a year before release.

When I saw the first pictures though, I hated it. So withdrew. Just thought the interior was bland, and the car did nothing for me. I think the wheels were a big thing at the time (wheels sell a car for me) and I just didn't like them.

Didn't take much notice after that until a neighbour bought a new one in beginning of 2004. Had a quick look and the 'bland' interior I now saw as great and minimal. I'd got a TTR at the time, and was won over by the fully automatic roof to my semi-auto, and from then onwards I decided I wanted one. Finally bought one a year later, and now on my second.

Again with the coupe though - didn't like the pics. I'd got a TT Mk2 on order when I nipped into the dealer to get something for my car. A silver coupe was in the showroom, and within 2 days the TT was cancelled and the ///M ordered.

Didn't like it until I saw in it in the metal close up at the motorshow. Purchase was made shortly after :D

Remember liking them but not the front end as i thought it looked to nice compared to the aggressive looking tailights and then i sat in one at Brands and remember thinking this is a nice place to be.The young lady asked me if was interested and i said maybe in a couple of years when they are on the used market never for one moment thinking i would own one. :D

I remember watching an episoid of Top Gear with i think Tiff introducing the Z4.Always loved the shape.Anyone else remember off Top Gear, it may have been Fifth Gear?

Tiff wasn't at Topgear then, I think VBH first drove the Z4 on 5th Gear and then they featured it a couple more times in some track comparisons. I saw one recently with Tiff driving it and the Boxster of about the same value and the Z4 beat it by half a second. They also had Tiff and Plato drifting/racing the Z4 and I think the 350Z in another episode.

When I first saw the Z4 I didn't like the front end, it was parrot faced, so I kind of ignored the car for a few years. It grew on me though and now think it's stunning and has aged better than most of it's rivals. When I first saw the coupe I was in love, it's still one of the best looking affordable cars on the road and I plan on buying one if I ever get around to selling my roadster (I may just keep the roadster and buy a second, more practicle every day car in a few years)

I didn't like the TT that much when I first saw it, now it will go down as a design classic. I'm often late to the party. On the other hand I liked the RX8 when it came out but now think they're an over designed mess :fuelfire:

i saw someone driving a pale metalic blue/green roadster one day ner my office in 2005 i think, horrible colour but i had never seen the z4 before, didnt even have a car until 2 years laters.

even so i saw it and thought, hmm like that i'll have one of those one day.

Went to the showroom. Sat inside. I think the new car smell intoxicated me. I didn't think much of hte design, cuz in my head, i was basically thinking, anything is better than the old car i was driving. actually got the show room car, which was nicely spec'ed out, also got a discount cuz it was a showroom car. =)

loving it more each day, and appreciating it more with each drive. I think love at first site doesn't work with cars or with relationships, i'm not stereotyping nor are my opinions fully validated, but i think people who tend to fall for something at first site is susceptible to experience that same moment with some other car or someone else.

Back to the topic, e85 is truly a what i call a classic design, one that instigated controversy, stirred the critics opinions. Something that you either love or hate, but never in between. For a car about to reach its 6th year, it has truly aged beautifully.

From day 1 I loved it, the shape and especially the interior, I think I'm the only one that thinks this, but its my favourite interior of any production car - I'd just bought my Mini Cooper S and seriously considered handing it back and over stretching myself to get one.

However, I didn't and waited 5 years - VERY VERY happy that I now have one!!!!

I saw one in my subdivision and I just couldn't shake the shear sexiness of the Z4. Sooooo 4 months later I got the car I spec'd out and ordered. It was the longest 6 weeks I can remember. 2 years ago, I traded it in for another one.

I was driving an e39 540i at the time, and although the newer styled 7 series had already come out, the Z4 seemed (to me at least) to be quite a departure from the traditional BMW styling. I remember going to the dealer for an unveiling, and I loved it. I brought the brochures back to work the next day and some people asked me what I thought of it - my reply was "This will be my next car."

It took a few years but it was my next car. A year (to the day) after getting the Z4 3.0 I had, I picked up my M. It would take something very special (or something very bad happening) for me to get rid of the M.

Cheers, Al

Me too. The roadster was nice, but I sort of liked the Z3 lines better, but when the coupe came out, it was love at first sight!!!!!
