A stupid Z question

Z4 book, £71.14 on amazon, ouch - thats used

£138.93 new

Man, those things have REALLY gone up in price !!!!! I got mine for less than $40. I think they sell them at the Zentrum in SC for $50. Nice book, but doesn't cover the "facelift" ones (so no coupe). Shows how there is not one little bit of space not accounted for in our cars.

if its not up to date then i'll not be buying 1 then

Any book written about a car currently in production won't be up to date. It goes into the whole design process, where the high strength steel is vs crumple zones, etc. Fascinating. There's really not much difference in pre and post facelift other than some exterior bits and engine options. I think they also changed spring rates, but in essence they're still the same cars.

Interesting that BMW went from Z3 to Z4 with a new model, sort of logical. But then stay with Z4 for the next gen model rather than go to Z5 :?
I suppose they have decided to keep the Z4 as there are now an ever increasing number of new models appearing with ever increasing names!

It appears there will be a 0 series below the 1series, still possibly a Z2, an M1 and 4 wheel drive versions of the 3 and 5 series

If they bring out a 4 wheel drive version of the Z4 you could buy a ---- Z4 3.5is Xdrive M sport. That will need some de-badging LOL

If anyone is interested, it seems the Z4 book is available at Play.com at £22.99 with free delivery.

Unfortunately they're quoting a 6-8 week lead time.

BMW initially wanted to bring out a new model of the Z3 but because the original had so many problems and needed so much improving, they decided to release it under a new name of Z4, so that it was seen as a totally new car, rather than a new version of their rubbish model. Since the Z4 sold so well and made a good name for itself, they stuck with it.

Was the Z3 really such a disaster? I never owned one myself but always liked the look of them and still do. Some of the interiors were really nice and a Z3M would still be a great car to own!
I thought the main criticism was that they weren't sporty enough, more of a hairdresser's cruiser so they made the Z4 a more driver focussed car.
Hmm maybe the new Z4 should have been called the Z3 :poke:

I'm not a hairdresser, I was a sparky for 35 years and for 4 of them I drove the pi*s out of a Z3 3.0i. When the Z4 came out we looked at it and said "They've gone soft, it's not a real sports car anymore", too many creature comforts, perfect for a young girl or a hairdresser. :poke: . The Z3 was basically an engine on a skateboard and I loved it, but the M3 had a backseat so I switched. That's the only reason. Now I'm back in a Zed, but I skipped the Z4 hairdresser model and went straight to the one I can put 385 hp into..... :D

Oh yes, I had zero problems with the Z3 in 60,000 km.

I thought a few years ago BMW decided that 2-door coupes or cabriolets were all to be even numbered (e.g. Z4, 6 series...) I guess this can't be true when we now have the X6, although I guess it could be viewed as a coupe-styled SUV  :D

Heard that too and it would make sense. Of course, that would dilute the 3 series a bit and I don't think they wanted to do that (rumor was that 3 series coupes were to be "4" series).
