A sorry tale of a knackered diff.

So, the broken LSD is out and has been assessed. It’s terminal (see pic) :(

Long story short, I suspect cheap bolts were used when it was built, a couple have cracked, and under load when going round the roundabout 7 of the 10 have sheered off and started bouncing around inside the diff housing.

Anyway, new LSD it is, which is a new year job (along with finally fitting the lightweight clutch). I’ll be going for the blackline quaiffe copy that seems to have received some good reviews, and mating it with a 2.5 diff I’ve just put in, in order to get a shorter ratio.

Huge thanks to Lee and the guys at Zed Shed in Hampshire for helping strip everything down, and then helping install the open diff to get me back on the road until the new diff is ready. Its mates like this you value in tricky times!

Wow, that is a 'catastrophic failure'.
From the top picture it makes little sense to me. For multiple bolts to have sheared, presumably at the same time, it would need some hefty twisting of the two parts relative to each other. If that is the case, how come three bolts didn't snap?

It’s a great question, and I honestly have no idea. I don’t drive it hard, so

It went ‘bang’ going round a roundabout and started clunking, so seemed like it was a sudden giving way.

Nasty :( . As you say great to have the likes of Zed Shed around at times like that

Sheesh that’s catastrophic indeed. No warranty on such things I take it? Glad to hear you’re back on the road so quickly

Wow that's quite a mess. :o

Good to know you are still mobile until you get your new diff.
