A snowboard fits in a Coupe

Good news Z4 / Snowboarding fans, no need to buy that incredibly expensive rear carrier from BMW.

Last night I managed to fit a 163 board (minus the bindings) in the rear of the Coupe. I just shoved it through the gap between the seats (upside down). The tip rested against the roof near the alarm sensor (and didn't bother me at all) and the tail fits just fine near the boot lock.

No rear visibilty, but then there's not much in the Coupe anyway!

There's still plenty of room for other gubbins in the boot...

Now, how much for winter tyres I wonder?

You can get winter tyres from about £130/corner, but there may be the option of fitting steel wheels with 17" tyres instead.

Alternatively, you can buy the BMW set of wheels with winter tyres (225/40r18 all round) from BMW for about £500/corner.

Get a gig bag for the board... if it's in good nick those edges will be sharp :poke: Here's mine from the recent snow here... just in case I got stuck on the way to work. Can now drive in my Malamutes!

Check out St Gervais - night life is a little quite, but Megeve is just down the road. The ski area is great and out of school holiday season it's very quiet. The clip below (BlackBerry held at arms length - going slow for fear of dropping it) was taken on a Saturday afternoon and is typical of many of the runs and how busy they are!

Excuse the soundtrack - doesn't quite fit, but the clip sound was dreadful.

163?? You must be tall!!

I've taken mine to the airport before and its a case of board in passenger seat, bag folded in half in the boot. Then looking a bit weird packing the board into the bag on the floor of the airport car park.

Not particularly, 6' and 78kgs. It's a Bataleon undisputed, only came in 159 or 163 and I sometimes (but not often enough) need it to be a powder board.

Already planning next years lads trip.

Always wanted to do a heli drop, if you get the chance do it. Was one of the best days of my life:

We were staying in Meribel, heli drops are illegal in France so I'd contacted a company that would minibus us to La Rosiere. From there the heli picks you up and drops you in Italy (legal) and board back to France.

Shunt - what was the company called?

Im a Meribel regular but any dumps get tracked out way too quickly

Went out with powdermountain catskiing whilst in whistler... best day of my riding life

Have got a K2 gyrator 162 that makes the pow so easy to ride

That's what I do with my 164 Atomic Radon (great board )... fits nice in the passenger seat, keep it good and wrapped up though, edges on the Radon are notoriously sharp, don't want them anywhere near my leather!

Went to Meribel (Mottaret... sic) last year, very nice place. Couldn't make it out anywhere this year though

edit: Shunt, that looks amazing!

It was amazing. They spent a couple of hours assessing your ability off piste at La Rosiere, then started the first of 2 drops. That heli clip was the run back up on the second drop, something I'll never forget, scared the cr*p out of us all.

The only downside was at the bottom of the second drop when we ran out of gradient. That involved an hours walk in thigh high snow, after 15mins I was fooked. If I ever do it again, well, next year when I do it again I'll be paying a bit extra for another Heli trip back to La Rosiere.

You can contact the company I used here: http://www.evolution2.com/federation/default.htm

I did a lot of research before booking with these guys. It was really well organised, they picked us up from Meribel, provided all the safety gear and a couple of guides, lift passes etc. Then dropped us back in Meribel for a pint with the rest of our group. Can't recommend them enough.

I'm just getting winter tyres for my wife's 3 series - 17" Vredstein's which seem to come to about £600 in total (staggered also).

My brother just got 18" winter tyres for his 3 series, same size as the Z's 18s and he paid about 700 for continentals.

That seems fairly reasonable, €290 for two drops? (that's per person I presume)

Shunt, that really does look awesome! Would love to do something like that.

How difficult was the route down? Also, how did the skier find it? The one thing that would stop us doing something like this is that the skier among us isn't keen on powder

We paid 300 euros each including the minibus transfer for 2 drops, which as you rightly said is reasonable for a once in a lifetime 'box ticked' activity. Problem is, it was soooo good it will now become an anual activity. Only 4 out our group of 8 could afford it, when we returned with my helmet cam videos they were just a little envious!

The weather was perfect on the day and by the end of it I was totally spent. I'm most envious of the guides, could you imagine doing that for a living. They even brought along their own special home brew with a snake in it! I'm not sure the health and safety over there is as stringent as ours.

The route down wasn't particularly difficult, nothing worse than a bad red, most was fairly easy. I only fell once on the day, but that was a 'big one' on probably the steepest bit we faced. I seemed to 'rag doll' for ages, but as there was so much snow around it looked more spectacular than it was, just dust yourself off and carry on.

As for skiers, in the morning there was another Scotish couple with us - both on skies. The guy had bought it as a surprise for his wife - her 40th Birthday! She was struggling on the off piste in La Rosiere and things only got worse for her on the first drop. TBH they both struggled and it wasn't long before she was in tears and called off the second drop, not such a great surprise after all. The guides were both on skis and managed well enough, on the board you just float on the top obviously much easier than skis. If you have a skier not keen on powder I would leave them at home, although during the walk of death I'd have happily swapped my Palmer for some skis.

Shunt that looks good :D

Looks a lot easier going than i would have thought. The off piste i have done has been quite a struggle with powder so deep falling over is a 10 min paralyzing episode  ! I've never done a heli drop and so was have always been worried that it would be shear drops and 3ft deep powder that you just wernt allowed to make a mistake in. I suppose it depends where you go.
Looking at the video though it looks easily within my capability.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the standard of snowboarders on the slopes this and last year has gotten worse? There just seems to be loads of average stiff legged boarders, whereas four years ago or so there was some real tallent all over the slopes. This year i especially noticed a lot more freestyle skiers than before, some with some incredible moves. maybe people have moved on a bit :?

Ah, guys, come on... now really jealous and pining for next season :(

Shunt, "If you have a skier not keen on powder I would leave them at home"... No. Never leave a man behind. All or nothing.

Dreamer, agree, that looks far easier, within my limits, than I was expecting :)

We're looking at Austria next year, may have to see what the heli options are there.

Sadly it's illegal in Austria too, I'm pretty sure italy is one of the few places left in Europe that still allow it.

Agreed it was much easier than I expected, with only a few tricky moments.

I managed to squeeze 3 trips in this year, Kaprun, Meribel & Bardonecchia. It's gonna be a long summer. :x
