A serious question for the medical people

How serious is MRSA?

My father in law is in hospital and we have been told he has MRSA in his toe. His toe looks yuck! He is 65 years old, diabetic and has been in the hospital for nearly a month after going on a bender despite having liver failure (he is an alcoholic). His kidneys are also supposed to be screwed and are not responding to medication and he seems to be very confused in the same way as when people get urine infections.

My wife has been getting mixed information from medical staff and they haven't seen a consultant. Most of the nurses/doctors aren't positive and it's clear to see why. However, he was in a similar state a few months back and seemed to recover (probably why he thought he could drink again). We are pretty sure he will die but we have been told everything from it could be weeks to he could just end up lying in a home somewhere for a long time.

I know there are a few medical people on here and understand there may be some kind of rule where you can't comment. It's just very hard living life where you expect the worst every time the phone rings. It would be good to know if it will be sooner rather than later.

I'm not medical in the slightest but have had a family member in a similar state. They spent a 4-5 months in a hospital at the end, once they got to that confused state as you say, it was fairly obvious when it got to the last few weeks.

My sympathies are with you and your family.

Deepest sympathies, not a nice thing to hear at all. All the best.

My sympathies. I've been in similar situations all too often in recent years.

In case anyone was wondering, despite my user name I am not in the medical profession, my title of doctor stems from a PhD in engineering, so I can't offer any advice on your situation.

Sorry to hear your bad news Mowflow. I'm a bit late coming to this thread and I can see you've had a couple of reponses already, but feel free to send me a PM if you need someone else to talk to about your father in law.

Thank you to all for the good wishes and to the medical professionals (or otherwise) that have given or offered advice. It's very much appreciated.
