A rattle to worry about?

3.0i Auto has developed a harsh sounding rattle on the intake side of the engine, just to the right of the DISA valve and a bit further in to the manifold as far as I can tell. The rattle rises and falls with engine revs. The motor was running absolutely fine on a spirited drive out this afternoon, I only noticed the noise when I parked the car.

DISA was fine when I pulled it out for a check just a few hundred miles ago. Is it failing, or could the rattle be something else?

I hate to sound flippant but it’s ten minutes work to pull the disa so why not just check that first?
However, the location you mention is about where the ICV is.

I once experienced a rattle after dealer service but couldn’t really pinpoint it. Several months later, found the socket ratchet wrench on the cowl panel

Thanks for pointing out the ICV, [ref]enuff_zed[/ref], that is likely to be the culprit. I took out the DISA and the ICV. DISA was fine, but there was no movement in the ICV rocker at all. I gave it a good clean with brake cleaner and rag and it freed up nicely. Reassembled and started the car to a nice even idle with no rattle. I’ll take it out for a drive later in the week to make sure everything is ticketyboo

Odd though. When you clean it you make sure it rattles freely. Then it’s quiet in the car. When it’s stuck solid you get a rattle???

I started the car this evening, it purred like a kitten. Clearly there is no problem with the idle. I took it out for a test run, enough to get properly warmed up. No performance issues at all, but when I get home and park up, the rattle is still there.

So, DISA checks out OK, ICV is clean and fluttering freely, what to try next?

Worn belt?

Good shout on the belt, could be that.

I’ve put talc on a suspect belt before which quietened it temporarily to diagnose it

I don’t think so. Rattle sounds as though it’s coming from here, which is why I thought DISA initially, but also ICV makes sense.
