A question about Z4 M's Nurburgring track time

As most have already commented, tyres will play the largest factor between the times. With the distance of a full (not TF) 'Ring lap, a set of cup tyres would easily amount to 20 seconds difference.

.......can't really understand why the coupe is slower than the roadster.

Oh please - it's a Coupe for goodness sake, what would you expect from a sardine can! :poke:

I simply put it as "Driver Skill" there is a difference as you know.

LOL! I use wiped my monitor of bugs!!!

A lot 8min time for the ring BTG is pretty quick!!! I was doing just under 9mins in the clio with a little traffic. I would expect the Z4 to be faster!

The Alpina roadster time is quite surprising given the lack of LSD and standard brakes/base setup no? Never been to the ring but it's on the wishlist, I suspect driving something with considerably less poke than the M would be a sensible way to start...

I love the closing statement "The lap times are still slower than the M3 CSLz4 m c (7:50) or the M3 E92 (8:05), but both of these models use naturally aspirated engines, built by M engineers."

Note, the CSL comes with Semi slick tyres (cups) from factory, whilst the Z4 and normal M3s dont. Makes a big difference on the ring.

My second round on the ring i had a time of 10.42. And trust me when i say i didnt knew the track at all and u got so much adrenaline in your blood that u're not 100% focused and relaxed. I had mini cooper S passing me :-D
This is year i will give it another go. But this time with ultraleggeras and uhp tires :)

They should compare the CSL and Z4M running on the same tyres. which do you guys think would win?

CSL, after all it's lighter, got more torque, got more power, got better traction & handling.

Yes but......

'Most' CSLs are not as light as we may all like to think, most have been spec'd in a manner that adds weight. I also found the gearing to feel a bit longer and I'm not convinced they all make all their quoted power.

The geometry is better from the factory and the SMG box has the potential to speed things up on track though I'm sure.

Overall, very close imho.

Z4Ms have been similarly specced though. So if you're starting with a 150kg and 30bhp advantage, you've got a lot of extras to add to even equal the Z4M's weight, and then you've still got 30bhp less and a poorer gearbox. Plus I also find the CSL less twitchy due to it's extra wheelbase (2497mm vs the CSL's 2729mm).

The only options my mate has on his CSL are SMG, air-con & stereo - and I'd still take his 2003 CSL over my 2006 Z4MC (and in fact I keep offering straight swap to him).

You tart... :nahnah:

Agree the CSL seems much more composed - never driven one but had pax laps in a few at many TDs including the ring. It just feels much easier to drive a the limit....

Wouldn't swap though as am too far down the old slippery slope...

Well I'd be happy to keep the Z4MC if it had better seats, SMG (with paddles), and some carbon panels - and I probably should have bought that 56,000 mile CSL on BMW AUC instead of the Z4, but thought the M3 didn't look 'special' enough. So the Z4MC won.

Anyway, why pay for all those mods and ruin a perfectly good ZM4C when I can simply get a M3 CSL, and get two extra seats (I'm not a little lad and was not uncomfortable over a 200 mile trip in it - although I did have the promise of driving it back to look forward too).

Yeah but the zeds weight includes the majority of kit the CSLs does not. Weight and power aside they are no faster in a straight line unless well into the tripple figures. It just doesn't stack up.

I agree they are less twitchy though, and easier to drive quickly. The noise is cloud 9.

When I drove one it felt like a much bigger car than the Zed and I didn't like that to be honest. "Much better gearbox", erm the gear change is terrible unless your giving it everything. Town driving is also a pain imho.
