A problem shared.

A problem shared is a problem halved right?

I was super excited to get the run flats off the Zed. Michelin pilot sport 4s’s all round, 15% off online, fitted at the local Halfords autocentres. Excellent.

Gave them a call first thing to confirm the best time to drop the car off. I was assured it was a very quiet afternoon and that if I arrived at 1:30 they would get right on it. Got there on the dot and was assured it would be about an hour. Went for a walk because COVID.

3 and a half hours later I get the call. It’s been raining and I’m already frustrated because I’d have got an Uber home if they’d told me it would be so long. It’s hammering it down, so I collect the keys, I’m assured all is well and I run to the car jump in and drive off.

By the time I got home the rain had slowed so I took a look around the car. There’s a chunk taken out of the front near side freshly powder coated rim.

I rang Halfords, I can expect a call from the area manger in the morning.

The good news? The tyres have transformed the car. Such a shame the moment has been ruined.

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, but seriously I feel your pain, the M.P.S 4s are an excellent tyre and also transformed the way my 35is felt and that wasn’t even on run flats, it’s a shame it’s been ruined by some careless monkey of a fitter

Ahhhh Halfrauds....where the worst of our minimum wage couldn’t give a rats ass workforce meets the public....’tis to be expected of such twonks.

Valuable lesson learned. Touch up should sort it GRC....but what a shame you have to bother.... :(

In your photo, the "freshly powder coated rim" doesn't look like a very good job, so perhaps Halfrauds aren't the only guilty parties. :?

you can clearly see the edge of the chip is lifting, and on the right hand end it looks like the coating is slipping causing a ripple in the coat. In addition I cant see a scratch where the missing piece is which you might expect if it had been 'scratched' off.
I would be going to see the guy who coated them not Halfords

Agree,you can’t blame Halfords .

Halfords. Oh dear. Well there’s your first mistake.
Still, annoying that it took so long and that the damage has occurred.
I agree with the others though, the wheels have a slightly questionable finish.

Bit unfair lambasting Halfords or even the tyrefitter , very frustrating but back to the wheel refurber for a touch up :(

Been a busy week so a slow reply.

Genuinely happy to be corrected, but i think the refurb job was a decent one (done by the dealer prior to sale to me so unable to take it back to wherever it was done) I don’t think the picture above told the full story so another attached.

The coat has clearly been damaged from the outside in? The ‘ripple’ in the coat wasn’t there before and has actually been caused by the damage (rather than being a weak point in the coat that failed). Additionally you can see where whatever caused the damage has indeed damaged the undercoat.

I struggle to believe that if the rim was factory fresh paint there wouldn’t be similar damage?

Irrespective of quality of refurb (I have no idea so can’t comment), if the damage occurred in Halfords, that is, all silver beforehand and chuffing big hole of missing paint afterwards, then why the feck didn’t the fitter fess up! Obvious answers include, he couldn’t give a s**t, worried he’d lose his job, genuinely is that blind he didn’t see it etc etc, but it really p$sses me off when people do a s**t job and sign it off (so to speak) as acceptable.

I feel your pain, hope it gets resolved.

Feel your pain. I remember having my 35i alloys refurb and painted at a main bmw dealer. Next day had a puncture and had insurance so went back to dealer. They changed the tyre and scrapped the whole outside edge while removed the tyre.
The boss wasn’t happy! They fixed it.

I get the general feeling here that Halfords is not the top of most posters go to tyre fitters. Who do you use and/or recommend then?

I have a genuine interest in this as our E89 still has its original, 7 years old this year, RF tyres which I would also like to change for non-RF and our rims are currently undamaged.

Many Thanks.

I tend to use my local fitters called Buckley Tyres, proper family business with a great reputation, always a quick and reliable job and reasonably priced too. Id always try to find a reputable local business over a national, they're reputation is important to them and imho you are more likely to get better service.

This.

When I lived in Bromsgrove there was a local family owned tyre shop I’d use. Prices were brilliant too. However I recently moved to a new area and haven’t had any recommendations. All the places I rang couldn’t get near the price of black circles :(

HALFORDS !!! :headbang: :poke: :fuelfire:
My local Halfords' shop is staffed by chimps, but the garage* put new tyres on my 911 well and at a good price. (*Are the two operations separate? I can't remember seeing them on the same sites.)

As for the OP's wheel, it doesn't look like a proper powder coat finish, but more like a cold spray job.
