I've only had mine a year but I think its staying. I do have a slightly different take to you "long termers". When I was looking last year there really was nothing for the £5kish budget I set myself other than the Z4. Being reasonably tall and well built cars such as the MX5 & S2000 were too small and although ideally I wanted a 987S again to land a decent one I would have been spending three times as much.

There was no way the missus would allow me to spend that on a car to sit on the drive virtually everyday, thats the reason my last 987 went five years ago in the first place. I have to say although I initially bought as a financial compromise I haven't been disappointed, pleasantly surprised in fact. I thought the zed would have me longing for a 987 again but its simply hasn't happened. To be far its probably helped there was a five year gap since I last drove a 987 to getting my zed, but other factors come into play to. There is noticeably more space in the zed's cabin than the 987 and the zed interior feels a lot more modern than the Porsche's which looks quite dated to me these days.

All in all there must be a whole host of us "new to zed ownership" folks who have originally bought on "value for money" particularly the pre face lift cars, who have had are expectations surpassed.

Good post. Before my current 3.0L Z4 I had a boxster 987 2.7, in my eyes a great looking car and one of the best handling cars I have owned.
I sold it ealier this year, to help fund a wedding, I wanted something two seater and sporty, having owned a Z4 previously and a S2000 I narrowed it down to these. Simply the Z4 offered far more car for the money so we went that root.

They are great cars, and I agree about the interior compared to the boxster. I cannot think of many cars that offer better value for the money, the problem I will have when I sell it, is everything else I prefer is a lot more money but is it really worth the extra layout!!

Totally agree. I would be tempted by an E89 and I do like the interior/exterior styling its a great looking car even now 7 years after launch. But I want a car I can load up for a long weekend away and still have the roof down going there and unfortunately "there's not a cat in hells" in an E89. That coupled to the fact I get the impression the roofs are very complex and can be problematic with issues including micro-switches and water leaks etc (might be wrong on this its just the impression I have got from the forum) . With the like of the MX5 way too small it only really leaves the TT which is front wheel drive and the SLK or back to Boxsters. I do like the 981 but a good one of them is still north of £35-40k I wont be going there for quite a while, certainly not for a car to sit on the drive most of the time and do a couple thousand miles a year.

So its like you say, where do you go from here?!
