A good down jacket?

Hi all,

With all this cold weather a nice warm down jacket is a must for me, however last summer I made the silly mistake of throwing out a jacket which had given good service the past 12 winters. Unfortunately it had began spitting feathers. A month or so ago I began searching for a new jacket and didn't realise how hard it would be. I wanted something for everyday use in town and occasional country walks, hoodless, medium weight so not so warm you overheat, zipped external and internal pockets with drawn hem. I went through all the branded makes online and looked at a few North Face jackets at local shops. Arcteryx seemed to fit what I was looking for but reading reviews they can be too warm when layering.

I ended up getting this one, 40 quid cheaper than from Timberland themselves :)

Was out yesterday on a walk and its warm enough but have a big issue that both external and internal pockets are way too deep, i.e. they go right down to the hem, a really stupid design and annoyance which spoils the jacket wearability.

Anyone have any recommendations on a decent jacket?

I bought a similar one to you, but a bright yellow from Columbia...to help with visibility in the dark of course..but only because it was £40 in a sale.

When it started getting a bit dirty, I ordered a slightly less bright orange one...but found they’d removed the interior pockets, so still wear the yellow one.

It’s very light & thin, but with just a shirt underneath, and a pair of gloves, I was happily walking around Banff in -32°c in February.

My ‘big’ coat was from Costco of all places, but it was too warm in Banff. Maybe if it had been windy or snowing at the same time it’s would have been useful. I think I wore it once, and that was for an 4 hour evening glacier walk.

Thanks for the reply :) I did look on the Columbia website, problem is these days manufacturers for some reason think external pockets are better than internal, you're also if looking online reliant on the jackets description.

I may revisit this jacket but again it doesn't look to have a proper zipped internal pocket.

Many thanks, I did look but unsure on an internal pocket, I've seen this one which is the Altus, says it has a zipped internal pocket, I don't want to make the mistake of buyking another jacket will silly pockets that go right down to the hem, do yopu know if the pockets are reasonably shallow?

North Face McMurdo a good allrounder.
 
I used to have a Berghaus down jacket that did me for about 8 years, and had a really nice feel (not shiny fabric) and a really convenient zipped external chest pocket and a shallow internal pocket on the other side IIRC. I replaced that earlier this year with a bargain Henri Lloyd jacket from their outlet shop in Swindon. This just has one zipped internal pocket but it is shallow and accessed just behind the main zip. Both cost around £100.

I got a fake northface down jacket from aliexpress 3 years ago was so good that I bought another the same but a differnt colour the next year only about £30 a piece shipped from China...

really warm awesome quality and cheap as chips, I'd buy another today if the seller hadn't been booted off Aliexpress when thy purged all the fakes :rofl:
 
I have closets full of Eddie Bauer, when on sale, they are great and you get the model with the fill you need for the temperatures you might be in. I have two older ones that are considered "down sweaters", perfect for the UK weather here in Van. Isle

:D You must be an Inuit ... because I worked in -32C far too many times , and no-one is comfortable at that temp. I think somebody was slipping you wrong info , maybe "wind chill" and you weren't in the wind ? Fess up, you just went from one shop to the next, that's what I do in Banff, then stop at the sweetshop and drool. :lol:

Side story was that while looking at them my wife said:
'this one must be really warm'
'How come' I asked
'cos it's twice the tog rating of our duvet'

At which stage I pointed out all the signs in the shop

No, but to be fair she said it after she saw the logo on the shoulder of the coat, not the label. I've dined out on it a bit though.
It also doesn't stop her coming out with other classics, maybe that's for another thread :)

Been having a look at some of the suggestions online and found this North Face Jacket that looks to tick all the boxes :)
so will try one out and hope it has normal pockets :roll:

Sorry, I was wrong. It was -31c - although it rose to a balmy -10c at its warmest.

Only stopped at one coffee shop, and it was an independent with a Kent girl working there - so I went in every day :oops:

Don't find I get too cold when I'm moving, and there's no wind. It was sunny, so obviously felt much warmer than the mercury showed.

Monday had a high of -19c, low of -25c; Tuesday had a high of -17c low of -30c; Wednesday had the biggest swing of -10c to -31c.
It warmed up considerably after that, and was only -5c for our 4 our canyon/glacier walk.

But that's why I took some really warm stuff with me - and ended up not using anything.

Skiing was just in a cotton shirt underneath my normal ski wear (Tog24 ski jacket trousers, plus boots, gloves, socks, helmet).

I like going to the US or Canada, as the runs are not what you'd call 'busy'...

I’ve got a couple of down jackets and waterproof jacket from mountain warehouse. I’ve been really impressed with the quality for the price. There’s discount codes normally available too.
