A few questions

OK, so a few things that have not been able to work out so far...

1) Driveway lighting - in my old car I could tell it to turn the headlights on after I got out the car at night and it would leave them on for a set amount of time (adjustable) so you could see your way across the drive in the dark. I've enabled Home Lights in the iDrive menu but this hasn't seemed to make it work, the DRLs were on after I turned the ignition off but as soon as I opened the door they went off. Can this be done??

2) Is it possible to set the passenger wing mirror to auto-tilt down when you select reverse? I thought this was standard but it doesn't seem to be doing it, can you adjust the position too?

3) How do you adjust the volume of the navigation directions? They are very quiet no matter what volume the stereo is at.

4) In the manual it says that there is a 'convertible function' to the climate control system (page 112). In my Audi this meant I can set a different temp and vent settings (to pump warm air at my upper body for example) and it would automatically switch between that and the regular settings as the roof was opened or closed. How does this work in the BMW? What does this 'function' do?

Thanks!

1. After taking key out pull main beam stick forward. Adjust the time the lights stay on in I drive. Bizarrely called "follow me home" lights which makes me chuckle.
2. Yes put slider you use to adjust mirrors to the right in R. If you slide it left the mirror will stay as is.
3 turn volume knob on radio while she is speaking
4 the programme comes on when you drop roof. In cold weather best to turn off auto whack up heat and set the lower and middle vents on to keep legs hands and feet warm.

Btw read your manual!!

Thanks ewwimbledon! Why would I read the manual when I have so many helpful people here? :)
1. I actually worked this one out by accident.
2. Ah you slide it to the right... to make the left mirror move - that's kind of counter-intuitive!
3. I see, catch her while she's speaking.
4. If I do this, does it automatically switch back to Auto air conditioning when I put the roof back up?

I am manual geek I downloaded from Internet and read it cover to cover before the car arrived.

The auto air circulation programme has to be switched back on when you put the roof back up. You could just leave it on auto and the system is supposed to adjust for the roof going down but in the winter I preferred more warm air on hands legs and feet as opposed to blasting the face. I don't think it's the best system eg I would like a mono button so you don't have to adjust both temp dials every time.

Yeah I agree the dials look sexy as hell but functionality wise they are a bit lacking from the digital systems in my other cars - where you could link and un-link the zones, set different temps for different keys etc.

Where from?

I'm wondering whether the dipping external mirror is an optional extra? :?

I found a reference to it in my user manual but it had the tell-take asterisk next to it that normally denotes: "only if you've paid for it to be there." Sure enough, switch left or right, my external mirror doesn't dip. That's a shame as it would be handy sometimes.

My manual says the mirror dips if you slide the switch left, but it dips if you slide the switch right. Must be a left/right hand drive thing that has not been picked up when they converted.

In conclusion, the manual is a bag of... But I do use the dipping mirror thing the whole time for parallel parking.

http://www.bmwsections.com/docs/z4/

It is in American though.

I'm intrigued to know whether I should have this or not. I assume you didn't specify it when you ordered your car? (albeit accepting that your car is newer than mine)

Ah, maybe that's it. Perhaps I'll ask when I'm next in for a service but even if it should be there, I think I'd be reluctant to let anyone tinker with the electrics. After all, I've survived all this time without it... :)
