A few questions on ways to buy a Z

Hi all, I'm thinking about getting a new Z but don't know which way to go about it! I'm sure that people here will have tried all the various ways and be able to advise me which way is best :)

OK, so first off if I go for a brand new one am I best going on a straight finance deal say over 5 years and then the car is mine 100%, or would I be best looking at a 3 year lower payment with a balloon payment at the end, and then trade in and get another new one?
The 3 year and then trade in sounds nice as you'd never have to worry about mot's and being out of warranty, but from experience (you guys) do you have any equity in the car when you come to trade in after the 3 years?

The second option is a used one, but if going down the used route am I best going to a main dealer and paying the extra and is the BMW warranty on a used one any good?

Not too bothered about insurance costs as I'm kicking on now lol, but what about service costs, tyres and brakes...rough idea please.

My local dealership is http://www.halliwelljoneschesterbmw.co.uk/ they OK?

Side note/question: I'm sure I saw at the start of the year BMW were doing a deal on the Z4 M sport where it was 3k from the customer, £6k from the dealer and £300 a month over 3 or 4 years....or was I imagining that?!? Is it a case they do better deals on the Z in the winter months?

Thanks in advance for any help ;)

Hello and welcome.

With the deals on new cars, especially on the the 2.0, it is probably cheaper to buy new on a 3 years PCP. The advantage of buying nearly new is you are getting a dealer specified car which will be fully loaded. There are countless threads on here about options and opinions there of.

Buy the lowest servicing pack and that will see you through 3 years of ownership, it was about £350 when I bought mine and I haven't spent any extra (apart from tyres) in the last 2.5 years and 62,000 miles?

Happy hunting

hello and welcome, sorry i can;t help with your query but sars normally gets i spot on so i'd give her suggestion some thought :)

Chester halliwell jones is where I got mine from pm me and I'll give you more info but I found them excellent and my salesman is first class both before and after purchase. ( we are on our 8th BMW with this chap)

For me personally if I had to borrow money to buy a car it would have to be the straight financial deal over a set period. I know I'm then working towards paying off and then it's mine.

The balloon schemes seem more like a rental to me and because I'm a car enthusiast, doesn't sit right with me.

If however you want cheap hassle free motoring with no emotional attachment to your pride and joy then the ballon scheme might work for you. I guess this is why balloons are mainly offered to the 2.0 variants.

But just my view on it. Some like to rent their homes and give them back after the tenancy.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

In days of past I've always taken out bank loans to finance new cars over 3 or 4 years and used my old car as a trade in, reason for this is it felt good too know the car was actually mine from the start off. However these days you simply can't ignore some of deals garages offer and their interest rates compared to high street bank lenders. I honestly believe the smartest way these days is a PCP tailored to your budget. Back in Feb/Mar BMW were doing a deal on the 2.0 litre M Sports whereby they were offering upto 8K contribution at 4.7% APR over 4 years at £299 per month or tailor made over 3 years but you pay more. I know some members on here managed to get over the 8K contribution. I was looking to trade in my 2010 118d M Sport for the the new 1 Series 116i M Sport but after speccing etc it was coming out at a whopping 27K which at dealers rate of 4.9% APR over 4 years would have been around £360 a month depending on the deposit and trade in. My local dealer was offering the deal on the Z4 so took a test drive and haven't looked back, basically mine was

2.0 M Sport (the M Sport spec was a free upgrade as part of the offer). The only extras I went for were metallic paint, heated seats and rectractible mirrors. I didn't tick anymore options as in M Sport spec it already comes with all you really need. From what I remember, the deal was 33K on the road, with 8K dealer contribution and £2500 customer deposit. They gave me £13500 for my 1 series so after taking the deposit off I had a cheque for £11000 in my back pocket which I've invested in some high interest cash isas. I paid a 1K depoit on day of ordering also. I'm currently paying £299 a month over 4 years with a balloon payment of £12400 if I decided to buy or I can hand the car back and walk away or use any equity as a deposit on another BMW. Haven't decided what I will do yet, options are to review at 3 years and swap adjusting the finance or I may save 3K a year over the 4 years and the buy the Zed outright. Depending if the the new Z2 appears in 2016 I may ride out the 4 years and have a look at one of these.

I still think a PCP is the way to go and if you look after the car and only do a low mileage and decide to keep it after the PCP period you could be buying a bargain as you know the car and how its been treated.

Tim.

Thanks for the replies guys, looked at a deal today:

I put in £899, the dealer puts in £3658, I then pay 48 months at £399, balloon after 4 years £10,287. (What have people been getting trade in on a 4 year old Z?)

So if you add my deposit, payments and the balloon it comes to £30338 they have got the cost of the car as £29485 on the road, so in theory the deposit the dealer is putting in pays for the interest! The only downside (if it's a downside) is the car is just the standard 2.0i and was hoping to get the M-sport.

@ Rialas, I understand what you are saying about renting and I can see your point, I've paid my house off and it's a nice feeling knowing it's 100% mine, but with the car I'm thinking that I'd be changing it every few years so I want to find the cheapest way to do that. I know I could buy a used car for the quote above, £400 over 4 years would get me £16500 so I could put a few grand to that to buy a nice used one, but I'm just worried that if anything goes wrong with the car out of warranty it's going to be expensive to repair!

@ Sars, thanks for that, £350 for 3 years servicing sounds a bargain! How much are the tyres to replace? I had been looking at a Caymen and they were around £250 each and didn't last that long! What miles are you getting out of a set?

Thanks again all :)

Thanks for the reply :) That must have been the deal I saw, I think it ended in May! I knew it was a good deal at the time but I'd just paid off my mortgage with a lump sum so I was a bit skint lol. I do look after my cars and only do about 7k a year! So I may just hold out and wait for a similar deal to pop up, I suppose soft tops and summer sell themselves.....lets hope we have a hard winter lol :)

I think after the few comments made so far PCP is the way to go, and like you say you always have the option to buy the car at the end knowings it's full history.

Thanks :)

Yea like everyone says the deals in Feb/march were prob the best seen, doubtful they will happen again

I got the z4 for 326 a month Inc the service with 326 deposit, I originally went to deal to enquire about prices on a 1 series coupe next day I had a z4 on order lol

Don't care about balloon payments etc as I am just going to swap in 3 or 4 years

The PCP (with baloon payment) should be available on any car, not just new, and also not just the 20i. Its just a finance deal. What was just for the 20i were the Q1 offers that many took. I think a few people managed to get 28i with that offer, although I dont know how.

There is no way of knowing if it will be repeated, but the logic is right that it would probably be a winter offer. I dont know what has happened in previous years.

The service pack is a bargain if you keep the car for 3+ years. Its also transferble with the car, so a selling point. You can buy it on new cars, and also on BMW Approved used if they were originally BMW Management cars.

If buying used, I would always go for AUC, cos the BMW warranty is good.

Thanks all, no rush to get one so I'll just wait for a good deal to come along and keep driving my GTC for now :)

That is one fantastic deal! Was it new and over how many years?

If you can wait, see what offers come out after Xmas. As above, wouldn't be sure if the bargain 2.0i M Sport deals will ever be repeated, but you never know.

Regarding the 2.0 deals, I remember when I spoke to the salesman at the time, BMW instructed dealers to shift the cars as sales were poor over winter hence the generous incentives.

Let's prey for a long cold winter then lol.

They were able to do it by saying the car had hill start assist when it didn't. So they werent charging for hill start, and we thought it was a bargain.

Now we;re wise to their little games, I wonder what next years scam will be? Advertise with doors as standard spec, then not supply any and tell the customer its their fault for not specifically asking if it had doors!
