Browsing TIS, 54340394395 is the oem p/n for the hydraulic fluid and Vaico VA-ZHM should be equivalent.

I’ve heard that halfords hydraulic jack fluid’s fine

Yes. Your problem would have been too low a fluid level as the motor now sits at a steeper angle then in the original position. The fluid needs to cover the base of the reservoir otherwise it sucks air.

Alan! After the weekend I've had with this bloody thing, it all sucks!!!

Cheers. I suspect it was a symptom of barely enough oil tbh.
I'll see what happens when I get it refilled.
