A couple of questions for sDrive 20i owners

The BMW Z4 Quick Reference guide shows that you can open and close the roof from the remote. I am able to open the roof from the remote but not close it, is this the same for everyone?

I found the following page which says you need access control, which I have not got. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=27267&p=376058

Assume that is why, but thought it worth checking.

Secondly the main user Owners book shows a boot lid opening switch which is not installed in my car just a blanking plate, am I missing the switch or has it been moved?

Cheers

I have comfort access and I can confirm that I can open and close the roof via remote.

As for the missing trunk button, I'd ask the dealership about it. That just seems weird to me.

Yep definitely correct, only with the comfort access option. Not sure about the boot switch.

Mine is the same as yours. I can only open it with the remote not close it. You can only do that if you have the comfort access pack.

Boot switch - I don't think I have that either, I haven't spotted it so it can't be there or I would've! I'm not going outside to check now tho but I will tomorrow.

I don't have a boot switch either, this is either to do with which market the car was produced for, do US cars have it? Or was discontinued after the early cars were produced.

My 2012 28i has it for sure. From the US here.

Hi,

I got my Z4 on the 1st march 2012 and I can confirm that the area where the boot switch should be is blank. It's not a mistake, they have removed it. With regards to closing the hood with the remote, i asked in the dealer at the time of purchase and was informed that remote hood closing was not available from the dealership on UK z's as it was a safety feature to stop the possibility of someone becoming trapped, it sounds daft, apparently it can be modded afterwards, but not by BMW. Hope this helps

Closing the top with the remote can probably be coded. I'm not sure about DIY coding. Seems risky, especially if you are changing settings no one else has tried. Downloading untrusted software off the 'net and connecting it to your car has some risk too.

The boot release is just one more thing BMW took off our cars to keep the cost down. We should make a list.

Anyone looked behind the blanking plate? I doubt the wiring is there but you never know.

Thanks everyone, just wanted to check.

Closing the roof is not a big deal to me - a nice to have.

The boot release is one I will investigate as my previous Z4 (E85) had it and was useful when dropping off a passenger rather than having to stop the car which I have to do with the new Z4. I'll take a closer look behind the OBD "door".

Cheers

Same thing with the 1 Series...its in the manual but not in the car! This is just penny pinching, cos surely the cost to do it during the build is minimal.

also there is no boot release on E92 from the cabin, only a blanking plate! asked for my colleague from Joe @ Soper (when he was there) and he said, it wasn't possible to retrofit it

It is. There is the cost of the copper wiring, the cost of the switch, and the labor to install the switch.

TRUNK UNLOCKING SWITCH 1 61319200316

That switch is used in a lot of different models. Volume should help with costs. I have no idea how much a switch like that costs in large quantities. Parts counter retail is $60.00.

For an estimate, lets say BMW pays £5.00 for the switch, the extra wire is 50p (copper wire isn't cheap) and the logistics and assembly time costs £1.00 --- Total is £6.50. Not much but if you multiply by the number of e89, e9x and e8x 1 series sold in the UK it starts to not be so small.

You wouldnt expect BMW to start penny pinching yet here we are! I am rather disappointed that they are taking this action as we pay a heft premium for our cars. Sure we got a great deal but this sort of penny pinching may start driving customers to Merc!

On the other hand we can use the remote key from inside the car. Not too terrible.

Ahh good point had not tried that, in my mind the key fob was in the dash, but ow you mention it the boot release is still on show so could be pressed for a second to open rather than me stopping the car.

Thanks Andrew - will check it out later.

There's penny pinching on almost all cars unfortunately. Having driven a Merc recently, I'd have to say as much as I find some of the plastics in the Z a real turn off, the Mercs use more plastic like this hence I'll stick with BMW (or Audi perhaps in time, who do 'do' interiors well).

I have a feeling that it is a legal requirement in the states to have a boot release feature in the cabin and also one in the boot too, you know just in case your parents were siblings and you lock yourself in the boot, sorry trunk :D

As for cost cutting, every penny they can save equals more profit for BMW and the Quandt family, not implying greed here at all
