Evening

Quick question- are there any kits to replace the aircon clutch? Or is it just a new compressor?

Cheers

Stuart

I think that’s where the ac issues are leading to

Final check tomorrow will determine

Asking to see if there is a repair for the clutch mech… failing that it’s a recon or new one and I’m keen not to have to recover and regas (unless I have to)

Used to look after the a/c in the offices at Sanden a/c compressors . Lots of cars use their compressors and are rebadged . No idea what BMW use. They need to strip them clutches off to be able to strip the compressors that used to come in failed. As to 'if' you can buy as a separate item, then I cant say. But must be able to be dismantled. Is there a live feed going to the clutch to make it engage when switched on ?

Calsonic kansei

That’s the check tomorrow- 12v across it when engine is running and visual check to see if centre is spinning

Can’t find any google search based ‘repair kits’ for that brand bmw compressors before E90 models, so I’m thinking it’s a new or recon unit IF that’s the root of the issue

When you ask for cooling, the low pressure switch needs continuity to allow the relay that brings the compressor in to send power to the magnetic clutch on the compressor. If there is no power to the clutch then you will need to chase backwards. If it powers the clutch then the LP switch is made and all safety switches (High Pressure) is also fine.

Most compressors fail due to mechanical seal leaks more than total internal failure. Not unheard of though but rare. If a clutch fails, then garages usually just say it needs a compressor than try and resolve the mag clutch. Its just easier and by the time you decant the refrigerant and remove the compressor and strip and try and fix, its easier to fit a new one. The gas removal , pressure test and recharge is the same in time on both jobs. They can be complex but pretty clever on how they work .

On another note, you could put a live feed to the connection when the engine isnt running and check for a click or clunk of the clutch mech working. it wont do anything as the engine isnt running but will prove clutch actuation.

Usually you can shim the clutch gap.
Of course if the coil doesnt work anymore then it's over.

Way to little info here to say something smart here.

Let me have a look today at it and I may revert back

Right I’m about done

Clutch engaging fine, clear running/not running and centre of pulley spins/doesn’t spin

Green plug I still doubted so I jumped it

No difference

Gonna have to bite the bullet and let someone with more skills look at it I think

Let me know if you need a known good compressor.

Thanks Liam
And if so Stuart, you definitely need to get the front struts sorted so you can collect from Liam on 17th July.

I have to say, with all the extra work you're doing on this car, surely now it has to be a keeper?

I don’t disagree… it’s properly grown on me and is now more likely to be a keeper- it’s in such good condition and now drives like a dream

As I pointed out to the better half, we can fit 4 cars on the drive and only have 3
