A BMW service journey.

Not really, both are technically a lifetime oil I've been told by BMW, and as it's done barley any miles I'd leave it to keep the cost down.

On a my 3.0 sixer I was told both GB and Diff oil were life time, so I had to source them myself.
 
Having worked in the past with an oil manufacturing company, I can say that there is no technical need to change the oil every 6k miles - it will easily last for 30k miles and will not degrade. Changing the oil twice a year is a complete waste of time. Don't worry about your oil being old, it won't have done any damage.

However, changing the oil filter regularly makes more sense, as it will collect any particles and bits of crap that are floating about. But only really an issue if they clog up and reduce oil pressure - highly unlikely.

Simple matter of course for me. The car generally gets driven well, and I do all my own servicing. Interesting point though, cheers.
 
All the gear and no idea :poke: :rofl:

Just be glad you're holding on to her. Don't think many potential buyers would hang around for long if they knew about 4 yr old oil in the car.

If its only had one service in 8 years, has any other work been done to maintain it? Or has it just been mods mods mods :roll:

I'd only get the gear box oil done if the gear shifts were extra notchy and more difficult then the usually are :headbang:
had the gear oil changed in my 2.0 roadster and it made a SLIGHT difference
 
Jonny, fair do's for 'fessing-up on a forum rammed full of anal BMW heads, but that's one hell of a blooper mate. As long as the cars not been constantly used for short cold runs or loads of town driving you've probably not done any damage, but there's no excuses for not getting your priorities right - pimping your car whilst it drives like an old dog is freeking weird. Bit like sticking a vajazzle on a ........... well lets leave that one there :oops:

Despite the lifetime fill gearbox and diff oil I certainly found improvement in shifting by changing the gearbox oil at ~40k miles on my old 3.0. Expensive stuff mind!

At least you only need to buy four spark plugs ;)
 
Re the fuel filter, as its had so little mileage good idea to change as old fuel will have been through it and stuff may be sat In it.

id like to see JE change the steering fluid .... :D

Give JE a break he did say he was going on the cars built in thingy so if it decided to say do something im sure he would have. mine is counting down to an oil change but it went up the other day after i did a few weeks of only motorway work rather than 2 miles to work and back....
 
While i am glad its sorted i would take "no damage" with a pinch of salt... Considering they changed the imaginary "hydraulic fluid" and the fact you say it was running bad for a while.

Low milage or not old oil is old oil, which is the life blood of an engine. Taking the booster within an inch of thier life Evo's and GTR's as an example have to be serviced every 6k miles for a reason.

Joey, I think his point is that the z4 has electric power steering, there is no power steering fluid mate.

Am I reading it right that 300 odd quid hasn't even got you spark plugs?
 
jeez.... my 2 services a year regardless of mileage looks a bit mental now.... I need to calm down.... lol

glad the car is back and running well...
