A bit of shopping....

Well... my plans to leave the Z alone for the rest of the year seem to have crumbled.

This weekend I placed an order for some of these:

What do they do you ask?

Well they let you bolt a pair of these:

... to the standard seat-mount positions, without having to drill new holes in the floor plan. Always nice.

Of course, those alone wouldn't be too comfortable... so I added a set of these:

... some Recaro Pole Positions (essentially E46 CSL seats) to the order. :)

I will do a weight comparison between the standard seats and the Recaros (with the mounting parts etc), although after how long it took me to get the roof weights before and after, don't hold your breath! :P Looking forward to getting them in though - not that the standard M seats aren't supportive, but having sat in the Recaros at a show recently, they're just so much more snug. They'll be perfect for the track and fast-road driving. :D

Oh, and hopefully getting a harness bar made up by a local roll-cage company in the same time as well (though it depends on their lead times). I saw a thread on another forum of a guy in the US that had one made up and he mounted it just behind the seats, bolted to the B-pillar. The company are going to measure up the car and design/make one the same, for me. Have got a set of Schroth "White Tiger" harnesses coming over from Germany which should go nicely with the colour of the car :)

Not sure how long it will take to come together and for all the parts to arrive and leave me time to fit. Ideally it'll all be ready for a planned trip to the 'Ring and Spa, which we leave for on the 6th October... so only 2 weeks away!

Actually, no. It was the only picture I could find of a Pole Position on a google image search last night.

I'm getting them in black velour for now - then they're going to be retrimmed in black nappa leather to match the original seats, and I'm going to have heated elements put back in. I'm toying with the idea of doing something like above though (with white leather/suede inserts), but not 100% sure yet...

Well black nappa will look great, and if you get the heating elements sorted again, they'll look quite OEM.

Where did you get the adaptor plates for the Recaro side mounts if you don't mind me asking? I've been trying to read the web address but can't make out the bit in the middle! Having to drill new holes in the floor is the reason I havn't done this mod already. Should be really good if you can retrofit the heaters.

Wow.... I am following this one very closely. Good luck!!

Who is going to retrim the seat for you... sounds as expensive as the seats themselves... :)

I believe it says http://www.vacmotorsports.com

I think your right, here's the webpage. It doesn't mention E85 applications but I'm sure one of these must fit. I'm sure sixspeed will reveal all! Hopefully they have a UK distributor.

Out of interest what are you doing with the seat belt tensioner and occupancy mat for the air bag system???

VAC Motorsports in Philidelphia are sending me the floor mounts. With the exchange rate now over $2 to £1, it's just as cheap to get them from the US and ship them over. Actually, the guy I spoke to who works there, Chris, is originally from Croydon in London/Surrey! Although it doesn't state E85/86 applications on the website, they do make a kit for the Z4.

I think CA Automotive do deal with them as well, if you'd rather go through a UK dealer. But it was just as easy to pick up the phone to VAC and order through them on a credit card :)

A guy I know is doing the trimming. He has his own company, called d:class, based in Woking. Not sure if there is a website - i'll post one up later if there is. He has said he can fit the standard heat seat elements and get hold of the nappa leather to match it back to the OEM finish. I hadn't thought (or rather, didn't know) about the occupancy mat for the airbag system. Presumably this is the same thing that detects when you have a passenger, and chimes the seat-belt warning if they are not wearing it? If I can get hold of the heated elements, then I'm sure I could find one of these and have it retro-fitted also. I will have to look into how easy it is to do.

Some bits have arrived today from around the world. The Schroth 3-pt harnesses look so good in white! Not everyday you see harnesses in this colour, but (apart from likely being a pain to keep clean!) I think they'll look fantastic in the otherwise dark, black interior on my car. Should brighten it up just enough!

The floor mounts are rather unexciting, but seats arrive tomorrow, so I'm hoping to test fit the passenger seat (at least then I can still drive the car if it goes wrong!) tomorrow evening, if possible...

I also forgot to add, the CSLs have gone off to Spit & Polish today for a colour change (shadow silver). With the window tints and carbon roof, the wheels needed to be a bit darker to complete the exterior look. They'll be gone for a week, so I'm back on the standard wheels and tyres again. I cannot emphasise enough, how BAD the Continentals are!! Improvements are always noticeable, but when you go backwards it's seems to make an even bigger impact, and if anyone is still running on the Conti tyres, I really cannot recommend swapping them out at your first opportunity!

Anyway... more updates in the next few days. I'm quite excited at getting the seats and harnesses in and taking to the track next weekend. I've never driven a car with harnesses before, although I have passenger'd as one and the benefit was quite obvious.

I think the darker wheels will look great and I can't wait to see the seats in place.
I agree. If BMW were to build a Z4M CSL, it would look exactly like this.

It's encouraging to hear that, as that has been my exact idea along this whole process. To build a Z4M CSL equivalent, and try and keep the mods in an OEM/Factory vain, without looking too aftermarket. Fingers crossed I'll achieve just that at the end of it all.

Bad news about the seats though - they didn't arrive yesterday, so I won't get a chance to fit them in this weekend. I might try removing one of the factory seats anyway, and check that the adaptor mounts/plates fit up correctly for now anyway. Bit annoying, but hopefully I'll still get everything sorted by next weekend!

So... what are you planning to do with your OEM seats?

I suppose they would make awesome gaming seats for your XBox 360 / PS3 / PC. :D

Go sixspeed Racer, Go!!! :driving:

LOL - i've already had the Xbox idea ;) But i think they'll go into storage for now, or they may even go back on the car through the winter after I've done a few trackdays this month. They're heated, and I want to get the Recaro's re-trimmed in leather anyway, so they'll have to go off to be done at some point.

After that though, they will probably just sit around until the car is sold. At least they'll still be looking factory fresh when it does come time to sell!

Picked the Recaro's up at lunchtime. Got them home and fed the harnesses through on one of the seats to get an idea of what it'll look like. Will rope a friend into helping me fit them this evening. They are quite  tho (although will look a lot better when covered in leather) and a lot lighter than the seat we took out of the Z at the weekend!

Your car was featured in a photo in Top Gear Magazine last month I think it was...with their long term Z4M parked next to you at the 'Ring!
