Just browsing piston heads and auto trader and im likeing the thought of a Porker 996 or a MB SL. Porker prices for a late 90s car are similar to the MB prices for a mid 2000`s car. So what would you guys choose, a later SL or a early 996? What are the pros and cons.............

Wouldnt get an late 90s 996, the engines were improved in 2002, so I would get a facelift one much less of the typical 996 engine problems like the block cracking. Although all the 996s suffer with RMS and a few other problems as long as they have been looked after and have been serviced regularly then this shouldn't be too much of a problem. But would have a 911 over an SL everyday.

Why not the SL tho?

996 for me, but that's because I currently prefer to drive a sports car and not a barge.

Might as well get an e39 M5 or S8 then, if you simply want to go fast in comfort, in a 1800kg car.

The pre-2006 model 'only' had the 469bhp supercharged V8. The later one had the 510bhp V12.

Just because it has horse power doesn't mean its focused. Rolls Royce's have that power you wouldn't call the nimble.

The SLs are heavy and a bit wavy in the corners which is where the barge comments come from. They have great engines but like said they are cruisers thats why you see no one using them on the track whereas a 911 is at home on the track and road. There probably isnt a huge difference in performance anyway and the Porsche will be by far quicker in the corners.

So basically, the SL is better on M and A roads but the 996 would make you smile on the B roads?

Not really a fair comparison as you're not looking at the same generations of each model, but it's fun to watch.

If your just wanting a nice 15k toy to go along with the family wagon..i think they both make sence

996 - I had one - very good cars and very cheap now too.

Not all 996's have RMS issues - mine didn't and I know about 50 other people with them who've not had issues(not a completely proportionate sample I know) but it is one of those things you'll read nightmare stories about from scaremongerers....it is a risk but a small one IMO, nor did it affect the GT1 block (used in the GT3 and the Turbo amongst others)....the 3.6 in the facelift is a better unit than the 3.4 so that would be my choice if the budget would allow...

Its is a small problem the RMS but it depends how the car has been treated and it won't tell you in your service history that the RMS has been replaced. My dads 997 had its RMS replaced as a matter of cource by Porsche and it doesn't say anything about it in the service history. Also there are no signs of RMS as its contained, its more likely on the pre facelift 996s.

Porsches don't cost much more than BMW M cars to run either intact my dads 997 last major service was less then my inspection II on the Z4M.

Not to mention the 2k per corner suspension issue the sl500 and above suffer from , also leaky seals shafting your electrics. A 100k car new with 100k car running costs, I love the look of them but would not ever buy one due to repair bills, and its not if but when. I agree I would get a later 996 02 on. Did see a 996 turbo very close to me the other for 20k

I've been sniffing around 3.8 c2s 997 , 4 seats , stacks of power and sub 25k for a decent one. Spent a little time on the 911 forum and the feeling is in the next 2 years price will come done another 5k so thinking that will be my next car...servicing every 20k or 2years and minor 700 quid major 1500 quid and that direct at Porsche so I think not bad at all :)

XK's new shape are coming around 15k mark now could worth a look , I quite like them . M5 /M6 engines worry me a bit few reports regarding the engines concern me 10k rebuilds
