981 Boxster GTS

So, after a bit of an extended back and forth on what to go with, ranging from a 570s, R8 V10+ to an M2C, I finally settled on a 981 GTS as my next car, as the Porsche, for me, represented the best bang for buck within the price category. The spec is lovely, extended leather, carmine stitching, Alcantara and carbon fibre, it feels a special place to be. It's only 330 bhp, but I've come to realise that as all the manufacturers chase ever-increasing power numbers (which is easy to get caught up in), the fun can only be had when you get a car to 8-tenths of it's limit and for the GTS that is still within sensible limits for UK roads. The 570s and R8V10+ which I almost went for are simply too good for road driving, after the initial drive, you find yourself quickly realizing that it's impossible to reach any limits of the car....accelerating in 2nd gear to the floor will see you hit 70mph in under 3 seconds, sounds fun, but actually frustrating in real life.

I'm not normally a fan of convertibles, but the wife wanting another so let's give this a go and see if I can enjoy it. Has anyone on here owned one of these before? Would be keen on the view and ownership perspective. I'll do an update when I pick this up next week, but already looking forward to the 3-hour drive back to Essex. :driving:

I should add, that I think I'll be putting my MC up for sale (not 100% sure just yet).....that's going to be a tough day :(

Lovely car! I'm wondering how much it was though, as I would never believe it was in the same price point as a 570s or R8 V10!

Yes yes yes...!! Awesome car, I doubt you’ll be anything but thrilled with it. :driving:

I keep looking at these 981 GTS’s....same price give or take a grand as a new G29 M40i......

Enjoy...!!

Ha, no not in the same price point, but was a case of own the GTS outright or finance a bit for the 570s, I went back and forth and decided on not owing the car anything....which in my mind is a positive.

Thanks....it's a cracking car, makes a special noise and is so well-judged on power, handling and braking that it stands out in the £40k price bracket IMO. I didn't even test drive a 718 2.5 GTS (which you can get for the same money) as I know it would have been better in 9/10 ways, but I know I would have been bored of that Subaru engine note within a week.

I'm with your argument every inch of the way. from how much power you need, to owning the car outright. It's all too easy to fall for the blurb and spend more than you need to theses days. Great choice. 8)

Just have to ask though. which end is the front. :?

On a side note, my lessons from buying a car in lockdown...get your money/finances in order, have no part exchange and then you can really be bullish with your offer. Dealers want cash coming in, as they know they'll be able to buy at heavily discounted rates with desperate sellers.

Hmmmm....not sure about that tbh imho, the difference a 718 makes over a 981 is nothing like enough to make the 718 the must have.....I’d take the 981 every day. I found the turbo engine as dull as dish water full of dull grey things....

EDIT: I may have got this wrong. Ignore me :D

That's good to know. I recall your posts on not loving the 718, which I can fully understand. I guess it depends on whether you really care for engine noise over speed, technology, efficiency, handling and new-ness of the car... I do, so was a non-starter for me.

My boss is always bragging that his tuned 435D has 401bhp which is 100 more than me but he doesn't quite grasp that his car is almost 600kg heavier than mine, which gives me more per ton.

Silly people getting hung up on numbers!

The R8 with 610 bhp and 4wd is bonkers fast, but rewards with the v10 engine note. The 570s feels even quicker to me because of the driving position but because the handling is so ridiculously good you find yourself being a bit of a tool on the public road, on a dry road you can take roundabouts at 70mph without too much fuss.

That’s lovely. More pictures welcome. I like this dealers too. They seem to stock nice or unusual examples of things. They have a lovely blue Macan there at the moment as well.

Fantastic choice. They are an utter joy to drive and sound incredible. Can totally understand the logic vs the 570s and the R8. Spend the difference on lots of road trips.

Great choice and I see what you mean relative to the 570s etc but your car is incredibly capable to the point within legal limits it's barely breaking a sweat.

The dampening and road manners are so good on modern Porsches that I find myself putting PASM into sport mode and generally being a bit ham fisted with steering inputs in my Cayman to get that heightened feeling of being involved. I think the Cayman is the best all around sports car on the market today but find myself looking at S1 Elises for that *insert cliché* involvement at legal speeds.

Modern cars are just too good and why I find myself drawn towards Frankenstein cars like K20 Elise etc where there's just a raw edge to them which OEM seems to dial out.
