94 Million set aside for cycling

I've been ripped off, my mountain bike had 20% VAT on it! I'm going to demand my tax back if it wasn't payable. Now far be it from me to suggest this but if you add up the total amount of VAT paid by cyclists for bikes and equipment, I bet it far exceeds the money spent on cycle routes and also far exceeds the amount of wear and tear they cause on public roads.

Tax is not paid on things on the basis that you get it back for using those things. If the tax system worked like that, you'd be in pretty dire straights when you got cancer or some other serious disease. Sorry Mr Jones, you haven't paid enough prescription charges in your life to be treated properly so take two teaspoonfuls of diesel before each meal and hope it gets the cancer before it gets you :oops:

Very interesting read, personally I'm glad there will be a bit of investment for cyclists, I also cycle and drive and I see the Pollocks of both forms of transport. Cycling can be very dangerous when there are no cycle lanes and or cars parked in them, poor and hazardous road surfaces, as well as watching out for the Pollocks of the driving world. Get a bump in your car and chances are you will be OK, get a bump on a bike and you could be dead.

It's always the cyclist that gets aggressive abuse from other road users, yet the roads are there for all to use. I imagine most drivers would pass a horse slowly and at a safe distance yet feel it is acceptable to scare, intimidate and drive dangerously passed a cyclist.

Why can't we all get along

Thank you Mr Guvnor :) , you beat me too it but I was just pondering over counting my 94 million exactly what part of my tax that I pay allows me to cycle on the roads for free?

I'm going to have to start a Z4 Forum Cycling Club. No membership fee, no hoons, no stipulation on what bike(s) owned. The only rule will be you don't jump red lights. All welcome, we might get TitanTim to join. :wink:

I am a cyclist as well, but would not dream to cycle on roads where I am holding up the traffic especially during peak times on otherwise fast roads (without the bikes that is). The same applies to horses - also no place on a main road.

I agree, but the same applies to slow moving farm vehicles on A roads in our area.
 
Some roads are out of bounds, motorways and some dual carrageways for example. I guess times have changed and the number of road users has increased quicker than the road network has developed. Hence the 94million, which I imagine won't go very far.

I'm in but I'm not sure some of the others can ride anyway so they cover up their insecurity with aggression.
As above, you make the most sense anyway. :thumbsup:

By the way, in my club if you don't single out you sure as hell get balled out by other club members. You soon learn the rules......

Many of them drive far superior cars to ours and manage to juggle both quite happily. :poke:
 
I should point out that if you read some of my earlier comments on here, that I do think cycle lanes are a great idea and I'd welcome investment in them provided they are separate from the carriageway and don't reduce carriageway width unnecessarily. But I also think that the principle that cyclists contribute to it isn't unreasonable.

It's just the way I feel. I also think you should have a licence and penalty points system for cyclists too.

I agree 100%, it's mostly what I have been saying, but just wait for the flames from other directions! :D

This thread has ceased to be interesting, too many people playing semantics.
