I've been ripped off, my mountain bike had 20% VAT on it! I'm going to demand my tax back if it wasn't payable. Now far be it from me to suggest this but if you add up the total amount of VAT paid by cyclists for bikes and equipment, I bet it far exceeds the money spent on cycle routes and also far exceeds the amount of wear and tear they cause on public roads.Lillywhite said:Of course there has always been a tax on motor vehicle ownership but never on cycle ownership and why should there be? In future there might be zero tax on ownership but increased tax on fuel relating to road use. Who knows, certainly not me or you?
Tax is not paid on things on the basis that you get it back for using those things. If the tax system worked like that, you'd be in pretty dire straights when you got cancer or some other serious disease. Sorry Mr Jones, you haven't paid enough prescription charges in your life to be treated properly so take two teaspoonfuls of diesel before each meal and hope it gets the cancer before it gets you
