80s-style steering wheel lock - thoughts?

Detachable race type steering wheel and take it with you ! .

When I took my golf to italy for the first time, I was so worried about having to leave it on the street I bought a fancy snap-off style boss so I could do just that. I had quite a few people come and ask me about it! I don't know if they've made it an mot fail for removing the airbag now but would be worth checking. That said, i don't think there's an aftermarket wheel I'd prefer to the standard one and airbags are generally a good thing to keep!

As for the physical locks, there was a test done a few years ago where they tried most of the main options so the video might still be around. I think the general conclusion was only the disk lock provided any real difficulty for the thieves. My old stop lock from years ago wore to the point I could just hit it with my hand and it would unlock itself!

Although I'm not quite sure if they are totally road legal or pass mot tests .

Probably wont pass mot if you take the airbag off.

It may pass if the light is out , there should be a way around it , I think demon tweeks and similar sell wiring by pass kits .
It's a bit of an extreme measure though , some townie crims would no doubt view it as a personal challenge and find a way to steal it anyway just to prove a point :lol:

A spanner , the ones in liverpool aren't clever enough to read or count , they would use mole grips , stolen from the local machine mart obviously , one size fits all

Dorky frisbee every time. It's the quality of the lock that's important. I used to do a bit of locksmithing years ago (helping a friend who was a qualified locky ) The Stoplocks are useless. I have a tool (which you can buy on the open market) that will unlock one of these in about 15 seconds !

I have a Disklock on my E89, and the only issue I have with the wheel is that it puts a small dint in the leather that tends to pop out again, so no permanent damage is done. I also looked into how secure they were, and apparently the only way is to peel the rim back with a pair of Stilsons, which apparently is quite a hard task, and beyond any likely scallys remit

Oh and you can get a velcro backed bag for the boot, to store it in to stop it sliding about.

I'd go to a decent alarm fitter
Ask for an inline pump switch or battery switch
Then it won't go anywhere

Secondly a car cover
Seconds to put on
Car kinda becomes non stand outty
And just a lump

I've left my M in London on mates drives
The car stood out like a hooker at a ballet

Then as they chuckled I put my cover over it
N it became a drab grey and blended in
£50 Halfords one I use and waterproof and permeable for breathing

Not sure how the psychology works having a full car cover. I feel that it may draw attention to the car.

Can't see what it is
What's inside
Without taking cover off
Mine sits in front of my garage under its cover
And my van stands out more than it

Thieves are opportunistic

Ok, thanks all for the input. The disklok seems to be the one to go for - I will double check the measurements, but if it fits a Royals wheel it should fit the M one.

Now I'm going to be "that bloke" in the neighbourhood who only emerges every few days to rotate his wheel lock...

some one wants this car they will lift it/mug you for the keys/break in for the keys lock or not. the cover is a good idea as described. if its on your drive fit a bollard infront of it.

Ps as our alarms siren sounds quieter than a phone ringtone
I'd look into a louder siren
As I'm doing that in spring as local alarm guy said can add a secondary siren to it easily

That is true, but I think this is the most appropriate measure, given the circumstances. No driveway, no ability to wash it prior to covering, not parked near flat, flat in a shared building. Someone prepared to stalk me to the door of the flat would probably not be deterred by a cover. Ultimately, it doesn't have nav, so I think that is going to put most criminal masterminds off.

I used to fit an ignition kill switch as an additional measure 'in the old days' using either an unused accessory button slot with an original button/switch or hiding it in the glove box or under dash. Old school we used the LT side of the ignition feed but I'm guessing you would need to cut it in to something like the fuel pump circuit now, would this be possible on current systems without doofing a module or tripping a sensor?

I think they are still based in Chorley, I went up once to collect a few in person, however that was probably 20 years ago now!
