800 mile continental tour - 42 mpg

Just taken my 2.0L '95 Zed across Belgium and into Germany and got 42 mpg over the 800 miles. Most of this was on motorways, holding between 80 and 90 mph with some 110-120 mph stuff in Germany just to keep up! I started out getting 45 mpg but anyone who has driven in Germany will understand the need to floor it quite often especially on those short filter lanes. :)

I'm on standard runflats and while they are very noisy on most UK motorway and A road surfaces, they are really quiet in Germany - one could say the Zed really feels at home there (yes I knowm they're actually made in the USA). However on those shocking Belgium roads RFTs are a complete pain.

Great cruise though and at over 400 miles per tank, good value fun too. With £ to € at one for one, top up your tank in the UK though.

Now where to ge on the next holiday? :driving:

When we moved from Suffolk to Scotland just over 400 miles the Missus drove my Z up while I drove her Focus complete with motorbike trailer and bicycles on the roof, still don't know how she did it but got 42mpg out of my 2.5. :driving:

Yes, silly me not 1995 - start again with brain in gear. A 2005 pre-facelift 2.0L Z4, there, I did it!

It would appear possible to get the same or better mpg from a Z4 and at 80+ mph than I can get from my motorcycles and as Clarkson would say... and this is a good thing. :D

I reset my mpg counter on my last fill up and am getting 22mpg so far after 50 or so miles. That's typically the best I get :(

As with most cars, if you can keep the speed down to 80 max, especially on a run, the MPG will be quite impressive. But, many of us are a little more enthusiastic with the throttle and so pay for it at the pumps. I get 26 to 28, but I really enjoy the car, so I am more that happy with that MPG. I have seen well over 40 MPG on a run, but boy was I bored.................. :driving:

It's always good to hear people with 3.0Si engines getting good MPG. Although I don't mind too much, it's nice to know if you're doing a boring motorway journey anyway, you're getting decent MPG!

On my normal weekly commute of 500 miles:

I worked out that if I drove conservatively on my normal motorway & DC route, and got 28mpg, it'd take 80 litres x 93p/litre = £86/week.

I also worked out that I had a bit more fun, drove slightly faster, and I got 23mpg, then it'd take 98 litres x 93p/litre = £91/week.

Thus I have decided it's worth the extra £5 a week for the extra bit of fun.

I'd be happy if my low MPG was because of speed driving. Unfortunately it's because of the local stop start driving in low gears constantly shifting and braking. It's not fun, you don't get anywhere fast and it drinks petrol - not fun

Makes me appreciate the times I get a good run all the more though :driving: :driving: :driving:
