8 speed auto are they any good

yeah its nice and sedate in comfort mode. in sports mode, it is a bit more lively and enjoyable. cant fault it so far, its a nice, smooth gear change

fuel economy is good. i have done 360 miles so far and it is averaging 35mpg

Had my replacement zed, with the 8spd auto (long story and due to hill start saga), for a few days now and have direct experience of both gearboxes.

I would say that the auto makes it a much more complete car and rate it a lot higher than the manual. Gear changes are very smooth and when in comfort mode you don't notice them. In sport mode and when you nail it, feels quicker than the manual. Just don't think you can change up as quickly or smoothly in the manual unless a pro racing driver or ragging the clutch and gearbox.

This is my first car with paddles and again they are excellent, nicest thing being that you can still accelerate fast and change up before going over 4500 rpm when running in. They are also very intuitive and when on the twisties it makes focusing on driving much easier as you don't take your hands off the wheel.

Fuel economy hasn't been any worse either.

To be honest without driving the car with auto I wouldn't have paid the extra £1845 but now having it I don't think I would go back to manual if every car I test drive in the future has such a fantastic set of cogs. Ask your dealer for a test drive and I'm sure you will agree.

As above really, though been using mine in manual quite a lot, changes really quick and punchy. I tend to change up using the paddles and just let it change down itself coming to a stop or slowing down, then squirt away again in the right gear.
Also from a stop I flick it up to 2nd before pulling away, just seems smoother to me.
This is my first auto so still learning the best techniques to suit me, but definitely glad I picked it.

P.S. its a torque converter box, a very good one...

Not dual clutch, see good old wiki:

Another auto convert here.
Had two E85 Z4 (Both manual) and now have a 28i Auto. Totally love it. Haven't missed the clutch pedal at all. It just feels such a complete car with the auto and suits the car really well. The 'box changes down to the right gear as you slow, especially in Sport, so you are always ready to go when you want.

I do drive other auto's so was really pleased this one is as good as it is.

The 8-speed auto is awesome. As others have said, shifts are pretty smooth in comfort mode but in sport mode, thing really packs a punch. Love it. I also like it that they went back to paddle shifters than the press-pull system. It's also a nice feature that you can just tap on the paddles anytime and it'll shift, on my Lexus IS, I had to put the shift gear to manual mode so I can play around with the paddle shifters, with this one it is instant.
