8 Speaker System

Okay, I know the audio system has been done to death on here. I've searched numerous times. I'm trying to figure out my audio configuration because it doesn't match anything I've seen. From what I can tell, I have BMW Business CD HU and Preparation, BMW 6-CD Changer I-Bus (no changer), no amp and 8 speakers (6 in the doors and 2 behind the seats). It actually sounds decent so I was surprised to see there is no amp and that this seems to be the basic system with 8? speakers.

There are 3 Audio options in the Z4. Basic, Hifi and DSP (Carver/Logic7). Basic has 6 speakers & no amp (with 8 visible grills),

I have speakers in all of my grills—I double-checked this. All I can think of is that I have the basic system, and someone has previously added two speakers to it.

I'm asking because I want to fit an Android HU, and I believe having a fairly basic system is good news for me. I want to confirm that I'm barking up the right tree before proceeding with the Android purchase.

In the basic hi-fi set up, the speaker grilles in the door cards are dummies, i.e. they do not have speakers behind them. It is quite a popular modification to add speakers here since they are the same size as the ones behind the headrest. On early cars the wiring is already in place whereas on later cars it is easy to tap off the tweeter feeds.

Thanks, that's what I thought had happened. Does this mean all of the speaker wires will run into the back of the current head unit? I should open it up and see, but I only wanted to do that once I was ready to fit the new system. I was thinking of something like this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/1005....0.0.69bc38da1ow9y6&mp=1&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa which will fill the space nicely and is adjustable up or down so it won't impact the air vents or the switches below the unit. Plus, the wiring should be straightforward because I have the basic system. Well, this is what I'm hoping for

Someone has added extra speakers in the doors. However the wiring in the early cars is actually there for the upgraded systems and only works if you fit the whole system including amp.
So check those speakers do actually work. It is more likely they have been tapped from the tweeters above them.

The speakers are definitely working, both the tweeters and the door. While I'm miffed at having a basic unit, I'm also happy because there are fewer complications for upgrading.
