677 Amp replacement

I have started noticing increased noise on my audio system at moderate volume levels. Best way to explain it is a lack of clarity and separation and slight high level distortion.

From previous experience this has been the start of an amp failure.

I was wondering if there is any direct replacement options with after market parts, or I need to purchase a replacement from BMW?

If it is the latter, I think I would rather rip out the below par and wrongly named “top Hifi” option, and invest the money into aftermarket improvements.

tHERE ARE NO DIRECT REPLACEMENTS TO THE 677 AMP..AFAIK..MAKE SURE A BMW ONE IS THE RIGHT FIRMWARE AND SOFTWARE REVISION..

An alternative is slightly more tricky the 677 uses a fibre optic cable to connect to the head unit not normal 2 wire per channel..

Would I be able to get around the fibre issue with a bit 10 converter and then run a normal aftermarket amp? Not fussed about having all 14 speakers running as I don’t use the surround feature most of the time.

I’m afraid you’re on your own here...the MOST system is not documented from an external / 3rd party / interface perspective..also it’s a ring bus that needs to be fully linked..any failure of any unit and the whole thing goes down...

So how you split out the 4 channels from the head unit by intercepting the data on the MOST bus is beyond my pay grade (so far)..

:D Appreciate the advise. If that’s the case then it is definitely well above my pay grade.

I have a guy at my work place that is a electrical genius ( he repairs all the advanced avionics for commercial jets). If I could source a wiring diagram of the amplifier I have no doubts he would be able to pin point the fault and repair it, but I don’t suppose BMW will make said diagram readily available.

Sadly to paraphrase the usual statement... no user serviceable parts inside..

These guys maybe able to help..

The technical concepts are not difficult on these babies it’s the proprietary info..
