6 weeks in the ///M has a problem - Advice?

After washing the car a couple of weeks ago, the following day when I drove it.

Released the handbrake, on pulling away I felt resistance/car refusing to budge on the passenger side rear wheel.

Followed by a clunk and away I went. All week it never happened again.

This week following a few hours of heavy rain, same thing happened. But this time ABS yellow warning light came on with the handbrake Red lamp. Turned the engine off and it hasn't happened again.

Gonna take it to a real good indie I know tomorrow.
Any suggestions from the board?

Sounds like either

A) Stuck rear calliper - easy fix for an Indy.

B) Normal - on these cars the pads do occasionally seem to 'stick' to the disc momentarily and require a bit of throttle to pull off. If it sounds a bit like your pads are made of gravel when you brake the first couple of times or so and then seems to warm up and behave normally afterwards I would suggest it was fine. This is more common in winter or when left for a few days, but I have definitely experienced it

Thanks for the quick response. When I say resistance...I don't mean you sense something is rubbing as you pull away.

It's a definite sense that the handbrake hasn't released at all.

A gentle pull off the drive 1500rpm the attempts to move forward and you can actually re-engage the clutch and feel the car rock back to starting position.

Or the 1500rpm to pull away, feel the resistance let the clutch out some more and then it's a significant clunk/bang noise.

It also happened to my E85's rear brakes. I used to have the handbrake off when the car is washed/it is raining. Then the rear parking brakes would not stick when the car was driven the next day.

TBH the above sounds exactly like B). Weird I know but true. It's not like a rubbing, it feels like pulling away with the brakes on, a bang, then drives normally from then on. Get it checked out for your own peace of mind of course, but unless it's doing it all the time, it does sound like it might be ok

The parking brake shoes can freeze to the drum when the car is parked while wet. Happens to me about every other time I wash the car and then don't drive it for a while

My MC does the same, but definitely not due to freezing, as we do not have that here :)
The brake pads "rust" to the brake discs after washing the car, or heavy rain. Symptoms similar as described above by others.

My MR does this too when it's been wet and then left standing a while. I got my dealer to look over it and he said it is normal behaviour on these cars as others have said. He suggested after a heavy rain session, and before leaving the car standing, pull the handbrake up a little while moving to get rid of as much moisture and get some heat in before parking it up. Personally I hadn't noticed it help paritcularly so I just put up with it occassionally.

I never use the handbrake when parked if I can avoid it and leave the car in reverse instead.

After washing mine I always move the car backwards and forwards with normal brakes and then handbrake applied otherwise it seizes.

The exact same thing happens to mine, passenger side only locks up after washing . Its a bit of a pain as i park mine in the garage most nights, the worse it's ever been was washing the car then parking it up for the weekend in the garage, couldn't get the car out on monday morning. Had to move all the junk from behind the car and try to rock it forward and back to free it up. Afterward the garage smelt of burned clutch. Took it to BMW and asked them to look at it, wastold that it wouldn't be covered by the warranty and I would have to pay......I walked off.
I now park the park without the handbrake on in my garage, no issue now.

Ur drive is a fricken nightmare to pull away from as well lol!!
Just dump the clutch an hope noones tootling along the estate..scary

Cheers guys for all your responses.

Now it seems it's a common trait, and I'm not doing any damage. I won't bother taking it to the garage.....just live with it.

Think I'll try leaving the car in gear overnight on the drive and the handrake off.

Cheers

A short drive after washing McDusty, my permanently dust coated sapphire black Z4MR evaporates all the H2O in & on the brake calipers. Prevents brakes locking/dragging and helps to get the wet stuff out of places one cannot reach. Of course here in South Africa the average temp is a bit higher and that must help...

My 3.0i used to do this qt often too,as mentioned ,when wet/cold and laid up for a few days especially. it no longer does so,ever since renewing all my discs/pads and handbrake shoes, and cleaning the calipers up :D

so nothing that isn,t easily fixable
