6 series Gran Coupe

What's the point of it, I could almost understand it if they'd done an Audi and built a hatchback version, but why would anyone buy this over a 5, or am I missing something.

as you said, there is not really any point in most of these cars (Audi A6 is fine, but what's the point of A7), I just like the shape of it.

Don't let tradition get in the way of a marketing department! The point of a sports car used to be 'being sporty' too until sports badges were plastered on anything.

I like the look of that 6. I like the lines of the A7, but then I also liked the CLS when it appeared.

The point of it is that you won't be mistaken for a double glazing salesman trundling around in a default spec (i.e. black or silver) 520D. It's clearly quite a lot more distinctive, even if it does get you from A to B in much the same way.

Me, I like anonymity so I'd go for a 550i in SE spec.

Wow your DG salesmen are paid too much given the base price of one as a company vehicle; or you haven't had experience of car fleets, without paying vast amounts extra to get 'what you want' type schemes.

5 series are generally given on 60k+ roles as company vehicles based on my experience and ownership. My knowledge of salesmen in the DG trade is that it is not what they are given for free. If they turn up in one, you are paying too much for your windows, simple as.

OT, I really like the car, adds a certain something; will certainly consider it when I'm requiring my next co-car choice & the Z becomes the weekend toy, or maybe morphs into a Caterfield...

I wasn't suggesting that every DG salesman has a 5 series per se, but that they are everywhere and the vast majority of them are in bland colour schemes and are diesel as a result of it being the default company car choice for many. I am sure everyone would love a yellow 550i or whatever but narrow minded resale/finance obsessed fleet managers won't let them.

A 6 series grand coupe however, whilst being much like a 5 series in terms of how it drives (probably), is going to be much less common and therefore, in asnwer to the question of "what's the point" is sufficiently different to a)stand out and b)be a bit more interesting.

As an aside the last DG salesman I met didn't have a 520D but a 535D (E60 variant in Sparkling Graphite), but in his defence he owned the company.

Is it just me or are are the BMW designers bored nowadays?... nothing about that car screams "wow" to me... it could be a Mondeo for all I care, just seems boring.

Agree with you and as someone who was recently in the market I looked a the BMW range and nothing shouted 'wow' in the luxury 4 door saloon market. Those that were 'OK' like the new 6 series were well over £70k.

Sadly Jaguar beat them to the design of this and imho way better with the Ian Callum (ex Aston DB9) designed XF. They seem to do the 4 door coupe look way better for the money and with options up to 500hp RWD are right in the driver market.

Limited to 155mph  and it will of course shed 50% of it's value after 2 years, however, it will be a good purchase then

IMO, on looks alone. In the flesh, this is one truly beautiful work of art on wheels. I would buy that M version over the 5 series any day.

I love it & would buy one without question in the future ( when they drop to sub £20k  )
. Isn't "the point"of it to show the other car manufactures where the BMW benchmark currently is & makes the 7 seem a little ordinary ?
My pal sells used for Bowker BMW & won one for the weekend . Now he's driven the lot in his 14 yrs & stated that it was THE finest machine he had ever driven . closely followed by the latest M5 8)

The M635CSi must be turning in its grave. Blander than a bland thing

Haha . are you reminiscing ? Maybe iconic & in its day a great achievement but hardly comparable to the 6 Gran Coupe  could the Gran Coupe be the new M635csi ?
I don't see it any different to a Panamera , Quatraporte or a AM Rapide & can't see why it offends .
Don't like it don't buy one ? :|
