52k in yr account by mistake

listening tojeremy vine today about the single mum who found 52k wrongly deposited in her account, missed some of it but was surprised how many thought it was perfectly ok for her to go on a spending spree, and questionimg the fact that she now has a criminal record. what would forum members have done,?

Stuck it in a 1 year bond - they could have the original sum back when it matured....

on the purchase of a house 5-6 years ago the bank deposited our new agreed mortgage for the new house we were buying - twice on the same day in to our current account - they very soon rectified it - led to a rather odd looking monthly statement.

I would have flagged it with the Bank, working in financial services it's a career ender to do anything but.

One of my colleagues once got paid over £100k on pay day from our employer in error - as much as you may be tempted, there is only one thing you can do :headbang:

I got overpaid WTC. I took some time off to study, a loophole in that WTC is based upon earnings in the previous tax year meant I was entitled to around £2.6k. I expected it to stop, I had disclosed all info correctly, at the end of the current tax year. But payments continued. It was the HMRC error and I proved it, but I still had to pay the overpayment back. There's no point in spending money you receive that you will probably have to return, it's a lot more painful!

Working in the financial sector I know that if they make a payment to your account in error they can't just take it back and the must ask you to return it, however you cannot keep it it must be returned. It's amazing the amount of people who are over paid or get money deposited into their accounts in error and claim they thought it was correct. Really you only expected 5k but you got 50k or you got 10k out of nowhere?

Some people do question it but a lot don't and when they are asked to pay it back they claim to have spent it and can only pay it back at £25 a month. Nothing can be done about that unfortunately if they make an offer to pay.

I would be right on the phone to ask where that money came from and to make arrangements to have them reject it back to the bank it came from if I knew it wasn't for me.

just about the exact reaction I expected from forum members, basically sensible people that know right from wrong.yes we would all fantasize about cars and holidays but at the end of the day we would never really consider anything but the right course of action.... I did think perry gunn's was a good one tho.

Nice way to get an interest free loan of £52k to pay back at a tiny amount a month. Probably paying it for the rest of your life.

ohh yes the interest free loan sounds great

what if you kept quiet and they never asked for it. Is there a cut off period, after which its yours?

I was off sick 4 years ago for 3 months, during which time I was on full pay. when I went back to work, they also paid me over £900 statutory sick pay. I was tempted to keep quiet, but knew that if I spent it then found out they wanted it back I would be buggered. It didnt seem right, cos I'd been on full pay, so I asked...unfortunately I was right, so they took it back the following month.

A few years ago my wife noticed that Amex had been taking monthly payments from her account...she didnt have an Amex card! Turns out whoever input the genuine customers direct debit details got a digit wrong!

I had fun telling her bank that they had to repay it due to the direct debit guarantee.

Happened to me a couple of years back, I deposited £2k into a saving account and the cashier entered it as £20k and gave me a receipt stating I'd paid in £20k, TBH I didn't even look at the receipt and only noticed the next day when I logged in to do some online banking, it was rectified before I could contact the bank to highlight the error but yep I knew it wasn't right so I would of got it sorted either way.

Stick it all on red. Hope for the best. ;)

That would be the dream outcome, right ?

However I wouldn't have the balls - you'd have to be honest.

That said, £52k at £25 a month isn't a bad deal...
