Autotrader valuations, from my limited experience, do tend to undervalue cars for the public. They are heavily involved in the trade these days, the traders pay their wages and a lot use their software to gauge the market and manage their stock, etc.

I sold a car last year. AT valued the car at £25k. At £25k it would have been the cheapest of its kind on the internet for sale by thousands. It was probably the best of its kind aswell. One previous owner, tiny mileage, showroom condition, etc. I sold it in a week for £29k and it was nowhere near the most expensive on AT (private sales). So I don't trust AT valuations.

I think their guide prices are usually accurate. Their valuations are usually aligned with CAP/HPI. Same with the advice of the likely price you'll get from car buying services.

Their pricing advice for cars being sold by traders isn't fair. They'll state it's a "good price" or "great price" based on comparing the cars advertised from other dealers and not the book value. Checking HPI/CAP and the forecourt values are significantly less than what AutoTrader deem a good price for a dealer.

It isn't fair that AutoTrader advises private sellers the true value of their car, but promote dealers selling cars at "good prices" when they aren't.
 
You make it sound like Auto trader are there to help the dealers which they are not. Ultimately they are a big PLC and they are there to make money. Auto trader pricing as good/ fair low price etc does not help dealers in the slightest from my own experience.
 
I sold my 47k Z4MC in the summer. Didn’t take long. 4 to 5 weeks and one price reduction. It sold on the day of the reduction for considerably north of £20k. The right car, history, advert and owner go a long way still. This advert is lacking on all fronts but I suspect they’re not really interested in selling.
 
Well I can't see it ever selling at that price. :lol:

MOT history is clean and it has been done every year which is a positive, although the current one expired on 9 October!

And if the Inspection 2 was done in 2022 it's already due an Oil Service, although one photo does show a 2021 date on a tyre.

But that's still a fantasy price!
 
It’s a waste of an advert 😄

As a private sale you may get £29,990 but in todays market you would be doing well!
 
As said above, I think it is a 'speculative' advert, just to see if there are any potential bites.

As someone recently said to me "it only takes one person to buy a car". Obviously that is correct, but I don't agree with the philosophy. Strikes of greed, which is a human trait I detest.

Yep, got the free ads. Useful with the fake number as well so as soon as you mark it sold, it stops the phone from ringing. Great method.

It's been for sale so long that the MOT, which they were pleased enough about to include in the ad, has expired. :rofl:

I have some sympathy with you, but I don't particularly think high asking prices are greedy (lying about what you're selling and ripping people off is worse than greedy, IMHO).

We have no idea the reality. The seller might be absolutely batshit, he might be very stupid. The advert might be solely there for the benefit of his wife or ex-wife.

The seller is probably a deluded time-waster, of the sort that makes me serious tempted to message him and offer £8.5k, with a justification as to why I think it's fair, just to troll the prick! But it's easy enough to just ignore the stupid asking price adverts.

The people who annoy me when I am looking at second hand cars are the people selling automatics or diesels - they really are the timewasters.
