the much maligned Mk4 Golf makes it past 500k miles and all on 2 clutches!

Also read at the bottom that an american car has done 3,000,000 miles!! :o

And, also in the US, a Mini Cooper has covered over 575,000 miles

(Ignore the title)

Probably no reason why any modern car couldn't go the distance with care and attention. One of the members on the discovery forum frequented by me and ronk amongst others has a famously high mileage Discovery 3.

This was the mileage in October 2014:

It's done most of it towing a large car transporter trailer with one or two vehicles on board, which is possibly even more remarkable. Has had a few new parts though.

impressive. The ford falcons that taxi drivers use here (usually the 4 litre straight 6's) frequently do 500,000 to 1,000,000 kms but I guess I'd expect it more from a larger lazier engine

Shure - that a 1966 Volvo P1800S is an american car?

Pedant! You know what I mean! :P

What a great effort with the Disco, I can't imagine how boring it would get driving a 4x4 towing for that kind of distance!! :o

A chap in the US hit 1 million miles in his Honda Accord, and Honda gave him a brand new one for free apparently 8)

I saw that article Bing. They they put the car in their museum! In the U.S I guess it's given that cars will cover a lot more miles due to the size of the place.

Surely this Golf has been to more far flung places than Torquay, Yorkshire and Cirencester to rack up that sort of mileage. Good of him though. Just shows what a well maintained car will do.

Shows how well made they are though - my Dad's gf has a Mk3 GTI and she's just had the clutch replaced after 178,000 miles!!

Yeah, it's his work of course but nonetheless. Good effort. The D3 is a bit like trigger's broom now...

That's a great way of putting it. I have a 3.5t lowloader (merc sprinter) it's on 260000 doing about 400 miles per day. It probably never gets cold and sits at 60mph all day and never thrashed.

Yet still its probably been rebuilt around four times, the maintenance is relentless.

I'm after a disco 3 for trailer work also.
