5 year report

Well, not exactly 5 years, but close. I have a 2003 Z4 2.5. I just changed the oil. She has about 30k miles. She has been trouble free except for the sticky steering which will be showing up in about 3 months and stay for about three months. The passenger window is making some noises that I am not liking. I will probably put her in the shop for that. She still has the original battery and she is about 50% wear on her second set of run flats.

A great car? Probably not. A good car? I think my Z4 is somewhere between a good and great car. Why not great? Because I also own a 2003 325i and that is a great car.

Will I keep her? Probably for a good while. I would probably trade her if the economy was better. But she is still in great shape and has low miles, plus she is not worth too much.

Did you own it from new?

Very interesting - the E46 was always considered to be a great car - what separates it from the Z4 in your mind?

Funny, I traded my e46 for my Z4. I liked the e46 and I agree with you... it is a great car. BUT, it is a different car than the Z4 so it is difficult to compare them.

I do miss having a hard top on some days. I feel the construction of the e46 was superior over the Z4. I miss having 4 doors... oh wait, no I don't.

I love the classic look of the 46, but I also loved the classic look of my e28, e34, e39 and Z3.

Ah, let me jump in here. A little background first. Got the 2002 325i w/sport and step (wife's car now) as a retirement toy. Always drove a company car (Pontiacs and Buicks mostly, with some Fords and Chryslers thrown in); wife drove a Chevy wagon, Mazda and Honda, the latter two were slightly used and she drove these cars for about 8-10 years each. Get the picture? No deep pockets, just a regular guy with three kids and a non-demanding wife. So, on retirement, always having loved a sporty European car, got the E46 in 2000. Still have it, and it is just about ready to hit 50K. In 2005, I sold my 2000 Pathfinder (as I figured I wasn't going to use it to tow a flats boat here in SoFL, also sold my canoe...among many other things, fly fishing is my passion) and got my Z4 (2.5i). Always loved the TR-4s, MGB/A and Austin-Healy's of my earlier years, but of course could never afford them. So, here I am, like a pig in sh*t, couldn't be happier with both of my BMWs. I'm fairly certain that I will keep them for the rest of my life (I'm 70) and in great shape...so far. Now, how do I compare these two beauties?

Believe it or not, although they have the same engine, I could swear that the E46 (50K miles, Z4-15K miles) is the faster car at take off. Why this should be, I have no idea. Maybe it is in the break in period??? I love the interior of the E46, much more than the exterior. I've got black sport seats and I think that the beauty of the interior lies in the burled wood dash. To me, it is understated elegance...real classy looking. I can almost sit in the car all day looking at the dash. As for the exterior of the car, it is just so-so; for exterior pop, we've got it with the Z4...a real head turner, looks bad standing still. Don't think there is a roadster that can touch the beautiful qwerkiness of the Z4. My Z4's interior is aluminum on a tan background. I know that I am old fashioned in feeling that I would have preferred dark burled wood rather than the aluminum. Once again, it is the classy look that I prefer...merlot, tan ragtop and interior, dark wood grain. A bit of a throw back to the old days, but what the hell, I am an old fart.

Performance-wise, the Z4 is the one. Bigger sound from the muffler, better traction, great handling...although the E46 is no slouch, either. But the top down factor with the Z4 is hard to beat, especially in the temperate climes of SoFL.

Maintanence-wise, they are both great. DIY oil and general filter changes are no problem. Done the OEM alarm, V1 hard wiring, garage door opener, GPS, Dice/icelink installs without problems...and although I'm handy, I never did any of this stuff before.

Bottom line, I love them both and look foreward to enjoying them for as long as I can. Only problen that I may forsee with the Z4 is that if I keep playing tennis 5-7 days a week, 2-3 hours at a time (I have two hip replacements), I may have trouble getting in and out of the car. But if that day ever comes, I'm sure that I will work something out.

Get rid of the run flats and it moves from a good car to a great car imo :) Had mine since May 04 and just had a light connection soldered and headlight washer covers go, oh, and a cd which jumped a bit for a while. Apart from that, servicing has cost me £300 so far.

Was speaking to a chap recently and every time his Porsche went in it was in excess of £2k. Las time £2.5k (£500 for an alternator) and it broke down on the way home. Yep, reckon the Z4's great compared to that,

E46 was exactly what you wanted, miss mine :(

i also got rid of my E46 325ci Sport Coupe for a Z4, if found the 3 series good, but totally boring in the driving department, the dash board design also looked like something from the 1980's.... the gear stick felt like a spoon in a rice pudding and the car felt heavy and sluggish.

other than all that, good but not great compared to the Z4.

That's good to hear. I bought my Z4 just before Christmas, about 3 weeks after my dad had his first hip replacement. He's been too scared to attempt entry into my Z4 for a drive, despite being car-mad. His second hip's being replaced in a couple of weeks time and he's convinced he'd never manage to bend enough to get in my car. I'll tell him it CAN be done :)

If I can do it I'm sure he can - clue's in the name :)

Getting in - put in left leg, controlled fall, tidy right leg. Getting out - both legs out, right elbow on body, no worries. Just remember not to park driver's side to the kerb

It'd be therapeutic for him I bet :driving:

I had a E46 3.0 for 5 years and as much as it was a great car, its was no where near as much fun as the Z4, but then again they are completly different cars, if I could have afford it I would have both, but only one puts a smile on my face

I, too, had a 325--a 325Ci with sport and deluxe packages. LOVED the sunroof and that I could open the rear "wing" windows but still secure with a hard top. That car was very, very good but seemed to me to be quite clinical in it's nature (not necessarily a bad thing, just didn't quite ever link up with me). Traded it in on my Z4. This is not a fair comparison since I moved up to the 3.0Si. Definitely would kick booty against a 325 and has much more low-end grunt. On the highway, the 325 was a much better cruiser than the Z4-you could relax a bit more. Surprisingly, the fuel mileage is the same for the two cars and that's not necessarily due to weight as the Z is only about 100 pounds lighter than the 325Ci. I imagine it's a greater difference going from the 325 sedan to the Z4 than from the coupe to the Z4 coupe.

Hey, Ally, the hips won't be any problem once he's healed. The only thing that will hold him back is his feeling that he'll pull something apart. However, take my word for it, nothing comes apart and he will have no troubles whatsoever getting in and out of the car. Hell, I'm 70 and play competitive tennis 5-7 days a week, 2-3 hours at a time.
