5-speed vs. 6-speed?

carl;, we're just :poke: at each other - and just because you have the autobahn and it's legal to drive excessive speeds, doesn't negate the fact it's still dangerous. If it weren't, why would you do it? Where's the thrill in doing a boring 45 or 50mph?...enfield...stop me now!!!

I don't know about you but I am off to Germany on the 17th. I will rent an Audi A6 with the 4.2L V8. I plan to drive well over 200kph on the autobahn. I am thinking of learning German and moving. I am sure I could get a job in Germany - there is a world-wide shortage of Specialist Janitors such as myself :D

Well actually I disagree. Inappropriate speed is dangerous. Personally I've seen the other side of 1.6 leptons in the UK (on a private road, of course ;)), but I was trying to shake a Bentley Turbo R at the time.

Carl, I concur that the subject is far from objective :) , we all have our opinions. It's all a risk - that's what makes it so damn fun, right?
P.S. - I love your avatar 8)

Enfield: If you need a reference as to your outstanding job performance skills and leadership abilities as Head Janitor, please, feel free to list me as a reference :D

You need to get yourself an SLK - 7 speeds and 2 reverse gears :P (although...quite what we do with 2 reverse is not clear to me :D )

How fast do you need to go in reverse? By the way, anyone ever try to see how fast a Z4 goes in reverse?

I want a 7-speed.... My next car will have 7-gears (& Rick - reverse does not count at one of the 7 gears) :D

I was thinking more in terms of a 2009/2010 M3....

The autobahn should be an 8th marvel of the world. Where else can you pass the police in the street at speed difference of 50-100 and they can't move a finger?? :D :D It's a special feeling, like payback for all the times you unwillingly but respectfully slow down and position yourself behind a cop who's driving just a little under the speed limit 8)

Seriously, driving at high speed might be dangerous, but getting into a car and moving out into the streets is also pretty dangerous. The important point is that driving really fast on the autobahn is normally only possible when there are few or no cars around, I have an impression people do show a very healthy respect for other cars when driving at such high speeds and keep their speeds adapted to the situation.
Should I complain at something on the autobahn it's at all the people who glue themselves to the back of other cars and don't keep proper distance, even though that is most often the product of a slow moving car getting out into the high speed lane in other to pass a slower moving car.

agreed Color, tailgating is uncool and it does happen on the Autobahn. I am hoping for some relatively empty roads for my drive from Munich to Amsterdam in September 24th....

Then one of your options are taking the A3 -> A8 from the Ruhr area down Ulm south of Stuttgart, just wanted to let you know that when I passed that area (20th august), there were roadworks all over the place. A distance of 350+ something km which we thought would take 2hs and something going at high speed, turned out taking 5 hours due to traffic density, constant narrowing of lanes and extensive 80 zones due to men at work. We also had to make diversion around two points where the autobahn was closed (probably due to accidents though).

I recommend you try a different stretch of the Autobahn or be prepared to be let down in regards to having large stretches of unlimited speeds down to Munich. It could be that on the 24th some of the roadworks have finished and you can go faster, but don't count on it.

Try planning your route on http://www.michelin.com, it will let you know which roads have roadwork

My only problem with six speed is that 6th is where reverse is found on my wife's car ... so I sometimes find myself selecting 6th and expecting to go backwards!
Doh!, suprisingly the 3.0l engine is strong enough to move the car from zero in sixth without stalling :)

enfield, that won't be a manual car with 7 speeds, or will it?

The new DCT dual clutch transmission is 7 speeds isn't it. That would be my choice.

Just to switch the conversation to the auto vs manual debate for a second... I like to know that when I reach 100mph from a standing start, at whatever time it took, it is somehing to do with my driving rather than just planting my foot... I have been in an SLK and I appreciate the performance, but in terms of "the driving experience" I still maintain manual is more fun... 5 speed, 6 speed, or 9 speed :D

sp3ctre, it's a good point that's actually quite hard to answer. For me, in the last 2000 miles there have only been two occasions where I wished I was in a manual, and both of those only lasted for 10 seconds or so.

:D not quite owned, but I did look like a bit of a tool.

Flexed the right foot a bit...not much acceleration...bit more foot...OK I'm not bothered really...KICKDOWN 2 GEARS...zooooommmmmmmmmm

The 'box has a couple of learning modes, it must have thought I wanted to be in grandmother mode

Each to their own. We had a CLK 320 for a while, and I really hated the gearbox. I just don't like autos -- I think it's the feeling of disconnexion between the engine and the wheels caused by the fluid coupling. Would be interesting to try one of those semi-autos though (the ones based on a manual box, not the auto box steptronic type)

my objection is not about performance... my mate in his SLK280 could no doubt get from 0-60 quicker than me, as he will get his gear changes perfect (or at least consistent).... but I think I would have more of a feeling of satisfaction that the speed and quality of the driving has at least something to do with me, not just a great gearbox. (not talking twisties here)

carl, not sure how old your CLK was but definitely now the auto 'boxes have a lock-up torque converter on every gear, so it only feels "slushy" for the shift and then you have direct drive, so you hardly notice it.

sp3ctre, well I suppose you do get a feeling of satisfaction sometimes with a shift, but for the 95% rest of the time, is it a worthwhile thing, it's just a pain in the backside having to do it?

The thing is though, as people expect more and more gears, 6 must realistically be the limit for a manual box, so performance cars are going to have to have either conventional autos or DCT/DSG transmissions, to allow for 7/8/9 speeds.
