5 speed v 6 speed

Seen a nice 2.5 for sale with a 5 speed box, my head is telling me to get one with a 6 speed as it's one better but is there really that much difference in real world driving?

I understand the 6 speed models are more economical due to the 6th gear lowering the engine revs (and the fuel consumption) it would probably give a more relaxed cruise for the same reasons :driving:

Can't comment on 5th v 6th speed on Zeds but my 2.0i 6speed Z4 is far more economical than my 1.6i 5speed Series 1. When I drive the Series 1 always seem to be searching for the 6th gear.

I think the engine would feel like it's revving too high if i didn't have that extra gear.

Especially as I do most of my journeys on motorways and NSL a-roads.

I've got a 2.5 Z4 with 5 speed box and I do often find myself habitually looking for that 6th gear, just to drop the revs down at 60 -70 mph.

I suppose it depends on what other car you drive day to day. I have a 5 series, so I'm used to cruising with hardly any noise, so then cruising in 5th in the Zed can seem a little hard work.

I think officially theres only about +1 mpg difference on the 3.0 to the 2.5.

Hope that helps !

Not sure what it's like with the other engines but I find there isn't much difference between fifth and sixth with the 3.0si.

Yep, 80 is about 3000 rpm.

80 is about 3200 in a 2.5 5 speed.

I do a lot of motor way cruising and would agree that you do look for the extra gear as I'm used to cruising in a diesel but to be honest the z is more than happy and still getting relatively good economy. Plus you still have some pull if you need to over tale rather than having to drop down (not sure if that's actually needed in a 6 speed z but was in my old 6 speed diesel)...

Oh the other thing that swung it for me is the 5 speed 2.5 is a more powerful model than the facelift 2.5...

I thought the facelift 2.5 was the most powerful variant at 218hp?

Dunno about anyone else but personally I only ever used 5 of the gears... 1, 2, 3, 4, 6

The 2.5 SE went down to 174 (from 192) but they also brought out the 2.5si which was up at 214. (off topic, sorry)

The si IS the facelift model though isn't it? So what I said about the facelift model having the most power is correct?

you guys know the engine's are totaly different on facelift and prefacelift wright ?

Indeed - prefacelift is the M54 post is the N52. Totally different. 3,000 rpm in my 3.0 Si Sport is just under 90 mph in 6th.

The facelift 3.0 was badged si

The more powerful facelift 2.5 was also badged si

Both were N52 blocks.

The less powerful 2.5 was badged 2.5i

Please don't get si and SE confused. The former is an engine designation, the latter is a trim level.

You can get a "2.5si SE" spec car. Facelift Zeds are all ether SE or Sport trim
