5/6 gears

For what it's worth, my 3.0 6speed revs at about 2500 ish doing 70 in 6th. I've not driven a 5speed so I'm afraid I can't comment on that!

I believe the extra gear is what goes some way to the 3.0i (6sp) having not-much-worse mpg than the 2.5i (5sp): the extra gear means less revs at higher speeds. I could just be making that up though...

Better MPG when cruising on the motorway.

Useful site: http://www.bokchoys.com/differential/e46_gear_ratio_calculator.htm

EDIT: Going by the site the 2.5 will be 2,961 rpm where the 3.0 will be 2,341 rpm. This is on 18" 255/35 wheels.

3.0 sits just below 3,000 rpm at a little above 80, what some would call a motorway cruising speed. My belief is that the Z starts to drink the juice at 3,000 rpm +, so a definate fuel saving gear.

I find that general pottering about at 30-40mph is easy in 6th, this must save fuel too? The 3.0i pulls from 30 in 6th without any problems

6 speed 3.0si is electronically limited to 155mph. Not that I have hit it. Yet. On my "to do" list, but not on winter tyres with a max speed rating of 130mph

True it pulls good from 30mph in 5th or 6th. at 30mph i think i remember seeing the engine at 1000rpm in 6th so probs saves fuel if ur a penny pinching tdi like driver.

If I'm pottering in traffic on the commute (which I do at least once a week) I'll keep it in sixth :?

You don't really want to be accelerating from 30 when in 6th though. I think it'll drink more petrol than being in the right gear.

in 5th on a 5 speed, it hits like 3500rpm doing 80. only a tiny drop in rpm going from 4th to 5th. would love to switch the 5th gear out
