It's a lovely car Jonny, but if you want more power get a different car.

How long do you expect to keep that Z for?
Once i get it tweaked i might be able to live with it at 172bhp if not i will swap the engine for a 3L then re-map that, and i intend to keep her forever :)

She's a lovely looking car. One of my favourite roadsters.

Stick a V10 in her

I admire your passion :)

I don't think a remap is worth it, but it's your car, your cash and your adventure.

Cheaper to bang a 3.0ltr in there and be done with it.

I've had fun with N/A Hondas and Type R engines before but its not cheap and you probably won't achieve you're dreams.

If you think you can do it! Go for it :) 3.0 is also a good shout, not to be ignored - had a few fun battles with 3.0 coupes and they're always surprising.

Is it worth looking to the Mini World to see how they get so much power and performance from their cars. Are the two engines related as they are part of the same family group?
My wife has a Mini countryman couper and that thing flys! It's a huge car with 1.6 engine.

I'm sure your four pot has weight advantages already over the six. This could be another area to look at. Looks like you where willing to spend a big chunk on putting a V8.. Instead put this money towards weight saving mods, replace the seats with carbon sports seats, carbon bonnet, brake discs etc. There's loads you could do here to gain power to weight ratio.

You could put a bmw(non-m) v8 from the 645/650...which my local BMW Specialist happens to be fitting at the minute into a stolen/recovered 6series for £1500 labour and renewal of some worn parts....so putting this into a z4 woul probably incur about another £1/1,5k for the mods...so could be done for around 5ish k probably :D

Like the sound of the v8 and v10....but why didn't hartge fit m-sport seats, lol

Yeah I'd be fitting M seats before a mad engine upgrade. Good shout Craig

I'm no expert at all, I had to inform myself quite a lot as well

A supercharger is really the only thing that will give you massive gains, but the price is higher as well of course...
What engine do you have Johnny? 2.2i like mine?
No a 2L so the engine wouldnt take a supercharger

I thought Jonny had a 2.2i - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46787&start=15 ?

Ah, I see. The 2.2 could have taken an ESS charger.

Are there no E46 kits for a 2.0i?

Edit - where did JE's last post go?

Na just wondered, as the ESS fits a 2.2 and you're after a supercharger. The other thread from tonight with the Skandinavian zed got me thinking. Couldn't remember if you had a 2.0 or 2.2 as its not in your signature so had a browse.

Bimmerforum might be able to point you at a supercharger for 2.0i - but I reckon upgrading to an ///M would work out cheaper in the long run with better results

It's understandable to keep a car, especially when you bought it new.
That's dedication!

Johnny, advantage of a 2L is that you only have 1 catalyst converter instead of 2, like the 6-cylinder engines. You should really consider replacing the OEM converter with an aftermarket 200 cells sports catalyst converter. Over here it's really a cheap fit, cheaper than getting a remap (if you only have 1 converter). The difference may be important, especially for a car of a certain age.

I drove 2 2.2i Zeds when I was looking for mine. The one I bought felt more powerful than the one I tested the same day. I asked the salesman (official BMW dealer and also claims expert) how come the difference was so noticeable. He explained that the other 2.2i probably had more clogged up converters. So especially if after your first dyno it seems the car has lost from it's original power, you should replace the converter with a more freeflow version. Cheap and better exhaust sound as well!

So what sort of % bhp increase could you expect by fitting a sports Cat?

I would agree, 5-7bhp tops, throw in a free flow exhaust and a remap after may give you a total gain of 10bhp.

The thing to remember is that you'll loose some bottom end torque with a sports cat. I decated a previous car. Gained some power high in the rev range, but lost low rev torque

It's not only about the power, but also (and maybe more) about the pleasure of personalising the Zed!
