Cheers guys I had a good convo with the LG expert at curry's pc world yesterday and perhaps the entry level 4k sets if under £500 for 48-50" is worth it. Otherwise I'll try and go for the best panel I can find on a 1080p set

Btw, what did you go for in the end?

LG 49UF850v - It was down to £650 at currys and quidco were offering a further 13% cashback at the time..

That's a bargain, I'm looking at 55+ but that's a great spec, will need to check them out

Indeed - I'll keep my eyes open for you, I know the 850 is available in 55+ but it is much dearer :(

Interesting read. Just purchased a Sony 4k 49" TV. Spent time with several specialists and despite setting out to get a Samsung or LG and without 4k, ended up back with what I always used to go with - Sony. Steered clear of curved as just doesn't seem to be catching on, just like 3D that's rarely even advertised.

John Lewis 5 year warranty, fairly expensive stand and a soundbar, all together came in at £1,300 so happy enough.

Delivered tomorrow but I'm out of the country so not well timed ...

Yes you have to be careful with the curved screen, if you have a window directly opposite your screen it will bounce the light from either side, it's one of the big no no in the trade. I personally do not like them as my screen is fitted on the wall so the curved screen looks stupid bending away from the wall

Hmm, I'm actually considering one with curve. A big 4k tv will do to fill the standard viewing which is 99% of the time, however, I've been looking forward to possibly adding 3d/curve feature that should be epic for F1/GT5 driving games to make the most of the imersive wrap experience.

Has anyone tried gaming on any of the curved screens?

Yes, there are two at work which are only used for gaming. They are pretty good if you are right in the prime spot, but overall I think that curved screens are a bit of a gimmick. Your brain messes with the geometry of what you see on a continual basis anyway. We have an Oculus Rift in the same room and that is genuinely awesome in comparison.

I'm with those who think get the best quality panel you can, regardless of spec.

The conclusion on 4K is that the bigger the screen the better so go for the biggest and best panel you can afford. The best deals will be in April as the new models filter through. My Panny 65" started out in Oct 2014 at £3800 I paid £1950 in April 2015 and for the next 3 or 4 years its upgradable and pretty much future proof which is where I want to be. Three to four years time will be a whole new ball game with affordable 70" / 85" OLED Screens that's when my upgrade will be

I'm keen to see how you get on. I'm just about to buy but am reticent due to the feedback re the Android OS.
300 pages of problem on the Sony website but now looking fixed after recent updates.

That would look Vnice up in the loft. Alas we just don't use the room enough to justify replacing the current old 50" Plasma job"

Enjoy!! 8)

My main concern with large 55" plus 4k screens is how well they handle standard definition. It's great playing the very limited 4k content and 1080p but as most my everyday tv isnt HD then it has to upscale and do a good job of it or ill just stick with my 50" panasonic plasma for now.

Indeed even on my 49" with 4k upscaling the image quality on anything below 480p is poor. However everything 720p and above is great!

Richersounds have a good deal on the 55" Samsung 6400 at the moment, might be worth a look? Unless you want 60/65:

Cheers. I've had a chance to go see a few TVs and I've gone for a 55' js8500, just a little more than what I was wanting to spend, but my current tv is ancient and I don't want to wait for the 8k tvs which will probably be at least double what I have to spend anyway.
Only drawback is that they don't ship with 3d active glasses anymore you need to purchase separately, but hey, christmas comes again this friday :)

3D glasses are novel for films, never used the, for games. I wouldn't worry too much about not having them, you are not missing anything

I picked up two of these on Boxing Day after spending a good month looking at deals.

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/televisions/televisions/lg-49uf850v-smart-3d-ultra-hd-4k-49-led-tv-10124824-pdt.html

Not really a TV snob but wanted the best I could get for sub £700 each as I needed two. 5 year guarantee was a must and as good as a spec as I could find. Someone tell me if I have bought decent TV or if I could have done better. They are still in the boxes and haven't tried them yet.

Have a look on 'HDTV Test' website. I usually refer to these guys for such reviews as they are very in depth and usually spot on.

No results for this tv which is the same as I bought, that site seems very limited..

They have last years model the UB850v but as can be seen they have stark varying opinions of it before and after a firmware update.

How did you get on with your new sony tv CJ? I was looking in JL in Tamworth at the weekend. Keen to hear what you think if the UI/menu/guide speed.

Rgds.

Funnily enough it was delivered last week and I was only back in the UK to build it at the weekend.
Took a chunk of Saturday to assemble the stand, hang TV and soundbar and due to my attention to detail more time to totally conceal all the wires.

Had to get a high speed usb with ethernet as the supplied optical cable did not allow me to control the soundbar as the TV speakers and all on the Sky remote. Once fixed, then perfect.

Only really used it Sunday but first impressions are very pleased with the looks of the TV, quality of picture, sound system, etc.

UI/menu/speed, etc. It's all good to me. No issues at all. 'Action' button takes you straight to a UI to do anything and there's help menu that connects via internet to TV on any issues or setup, diagnosis, etc. Don't have anything to compare it to so can't say how good compared to others, but coming from a non smart TV this is very slick and easy to use.

Hope this helps.
BTW - JL in Solihull is where I purchased as they have a much wider range and a Sony expert on site.
