£4K hike?

derin100, had a look at your website and that is an interesting collection you have (had). I assume you are not married then 8)

Given your knowledge of the marque, I am surprised that you would consider a car for that amount of money though. The gap between the same car with say 20k miles is at least 100% more and there are so many "standard" 2006 cars about, even with your low annual mileage you would never get that back, especially given the marmite colour as well. Your best bet for a limited loss would definitely be an M though as there are fewer about.

@derin100 Sytner have a rep for doing such antics. They are dealers after all it's their job for making profit! 4k is a slap, I've seen it on 3 occasions now by Sytner. Imo, unless you know what life it's had, where it's been kept etc, low milers don't mean jack!!

Risky game to play given the colour and interior that will appeal to fewer people.

Yes it's got all the bits and is a very low mileage car but for nearly £20k I am sure most people would spend their money elsewhere...on perhaps a mint ///M or something similar.

The current price for that PY one is the same as i paid for my car back in 2010 when it was 2 years old with 8K miles! So that is ridiculous.

my car is/ was on 49K miles and was fault free so imo i would look for a well serviced car.. with the money you will save you could respray and retrim the interior if you want it in concourse condition!

Yes, on reflection in the cold light of day, I agree with all of the above comments.

I might well be much better off going for something much cheaper even if it needs a bit of work and that way it will also give me something to do as I have no other projects on the go to keep me interested. Of more recent BMWs the Z4 and Coupe are probably the only ones that hold any interest for me particularly aesthetically.

I think I should just kick-back, relax and see what turns up. I've realised that the likes of Sytner's must just have a constant radar switched on for anything low mileage that they just buy up immediately and slap a hefty premium on just to keep the value of any of their other stock constantly and artificially high. I'm never going to get in ahead of them. There are also other dealers that engage in similar "cartelism" type tactics too on other models of BMW.

Yes, I am actually married! 25 years this coming year and 3 Kids! But the nature of my job means that I'm on-call a lot. It used to be 1 in 3 nights and weekends. Although I do it from home (and don't have to wait in the hospital) this means I can't 'go out' or venture too far. Over 10 years ago I made a conscious decision to give up watching TV and wasting my time just being fed a cheap and mindless diet of "reality TV" shows like "Celebrity Big Brother Strictly Get Me Out of Here Bake Off on Ice" or whatever they dream up next to dumb us down. I decided I was going to try to do something different, teach myself or learn stuff off the internet and do the cars instead and so even if I didn't make a money doing it I'd have something to show for it rather than just a blurred memory of sitting on a sofa for years!

I've learnt a lot; had some successes...but also spent a lot of money (and not always got it all back)...and I've had some nightmares and grief! LOL But I think it's still been worthwhile.

Great story and good lifestyle change

Also on my 25th year of marriage here, also on call a lot - but not medical, so in the same position of collecting cars and not driving a lot. A great portfolio once again though

Really?

The other car I appear to have missed by a close margin was this (and more what I was looking for):

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/z4-roadster/bmw-z4-3-0i-se-roadster--only-25k-miles--factory-hardtop--impeccable-example/3325389

Any background on that one?

Not seen that before myself. Looks really nice from the Add, Pre face lift, but has lots of toys & a hard top, worth looking at.

It was!
I spotted it as soon as it came up on Carandclassic on Friday night and emailed the dealer first thing Saturday morning (maybe about 9.45 am) only to be told he'd already just sold it! :(

Good to see this - my car is almost identical but a year older at 2004 and 29k miles - no hardtop but has Nav , FBMWSH , one previous owner and totally original - mine's not for sale but still nice to see good examples of these early cars sell for decent money.

If you do ever decide to sell etc etc.....

:)

Car is Sorned and tucked up in garage - I did come close to selling it last year because I don't really use it ( 500 miles in 2 years is a disgrace  ) but when it came to it I backed off - these cars do get under your skin :D

I wish you good luck in finding the right car - imho sterling grey with 108's is the best combination.

How about an even bigger disgrace on my part..... 2K miles in nearly 10 years! 27K miles on the clock:

That is some car - and I thought I was fussy

It's a bit like your Z4 i.e. "Not For Sale" !

The pics above were of it taken this summer. Below are some pics of it about 9 years ago. I bought it with just under 25K miles and it's now a bit over 27K miles. It's never been driven in the winter or rain since the day I bought it.

It's a balancing act though between keeping it with low miles and pristine and trying to keep everything "moving". Last year I had to replace the CATS as one had collapsed internally and that was probably just due to lack of use.

Yes...it's got to be!

Impressive ethos and web site Derin
I bought myself out of on call duties a few years back ,best thing I ever did , just got fed with up it all when it stopped being fun when I was on call with a different team of juniors , most of whom had little interest in any form of continuity of care or responsibility . I have seriously thought about doing something like your good self but that's a full time job and I simply have don't the time to do that right now . Best of luck in your search .

Prof,
I'm actually still very much in the same position as you. In fact worse! I can't even afford to buy myself out of the on-call situation yet! And as we both know but outsiders fail to appreciate that's actually the worst (of many things) about the job!

Different team of juniors? I'm lucky if mine even bother to turn up at all! Seriously. I turn up for an operating list...they don't...and I end up clerking all of the patients myself, doing the ops with my two hands (when really it needed four) and then discharging the patients myself!

I've worked out that I'm 52 in a month and that (God willing) I'll "walk" in 3 years time max. Sod the pension! By then, I hope I will have learnt/taught myself enough over the past 15 years to go to our house in France and do something with the cars full-time. Although I've never even owned one yet, my feeling is that the Z4 is a niche model that I'd really like to get into have an enthusiasm for. They're an exciting looking car whereas most later BMWs aren't for me...and I feel I've done my fair share of saving the older ones and can't summon up the enthusiasm anymore to endlessly sort out rust on them .

That's somewhat depressing for someone who's just reached CCT - where do you both work? Yesterday I was assisted by a registrar and a house officer in theatre. There would have been a couple of SHOs too except one is working nights and the other is recovering from an op on Monday. I don't find the juniors to be lacking enthusiasm, more that the EWTD and seemingly irrelevant "training" commitments conspire to keep them away from work and thence depriving them of the opportunity to be a cohesive part of the team.

I don't wish to depress you having just reached your CCT but....

For example (and as you allude to when you mention EWTD) the EWTD never existed "in my day" when I was a junior. There was no notion of an SHO having "worked nights" and hence off the next day. I'm not saying it was right...but in my first SHO job in 1988 I was on a 1:2. That meant I could work: Monday = 24 hrs, then no break into Tuesday= 8 hrs, then Wednesday 24 hrs, then no break into Thursday 8hrs, then Friday, Saturday and Sunday all 24 hrs each.

That would amount to a 136 hour week.

That would then be followed by a week (because it was a 1:2) of: Monday =8 hrs , then Tuesday = 24hrs, then Wednesday= 8hrs, then Thursday = 24hrs, then Friday = 8 hrs. Giving a total of (a mere) 72 hours for that week.

But then the next week would be back up to 136 hours...because it was a 1:2.

And whilst on-call I'd have to drive between 3 hospitals to do it. The distance between Burnley and Bury was a 34 mile round trip. Between Burnley and Bolton was 62 miles. I remember the mileage to this day!

Throughout my whole career as a Junior I never went below a 1:4 and then only briefly as a Medical HO at the Royal London for 3 months. As an SPR in the West of Scotland we covered 17 A&E departments and had to travel between then and had to do the operations mostly on site...carrying the surgical equipment in the boots of our cars. And get on with the ops without a consultant in sight.

I remember one night having just walked out of Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock at 1am in the morning, in the winter, having started operating on a case at 8am the preceding morning only to get a bleep because I was on-call to go to Stirling. Even Google Maps shows that's over 50 miles one way (and that's an under estimate I think)...and you had to do it. And then be back at Kilmarnock to take the Ward Round the next morning at Kilmarnock.

And then...whether you were on-call or not...you were expected to turn up every Saturday morning between 9am- Midday for a "teaching ward round" at the central hospital. It wasn't a "teaching ward round" at all. It was an exercise in ritual humiliation conducted by the Professor upon you in front of all the other juniors and overseas visiting doctors. You just had to endure and suffer it. And there was no notion of making a complaint about "bullying". You just had to take it....and make sure your patients were "right"!

"Bullying" wasn't even a word in the Medical Training Dictionary. Well, maybe it was and the definition was: "This is how you train doctors to be good doctors."

When I did my surgical house job (and bear in mind I wasn't a naïve 'kid' by this stage as I'd already done a dental degree as well as medicine by then, had been married for 5 years and was a father) my consultant pulled out a pen knife on me one day on a ward round and threatened me with it in my face for daring to order an ultra-sound on a cholecystectomy patient of his that I thought may have had a post-op collection. "How dare I, as a House Officer, suggest that one of his patients had a post-op complication!" :o

The people I see now coming through as trainees and close to the end of their training are scared to do what I wasn't expected to just get on with myself (and get right) as an SHO back in the 1980s.

But I think we've digressed from the original topic?
