40th birthday present to myself

Hello everyone, I’ve been an anonymous lurker for a while now, but finally bit the bullet and purchased a Z4 after searching for a couple of months. Found the advice on the forum invaluable while looking, so hence signing up.

It’s been a crap couple of years with covid, lockdown etc. plus my 40th ( :( ) birthday is coming up, so I decided to treat myself to a little, convertible sports car. I’ve always been a BMW man so this inevitably led me to a Z4. My budget was 5k and despite my X1 taking a fair chunk of that (new idrive unit - £1400, cheers) I found this one in Watford, fell in love with it and decided to bring her home to Oxford. That drive back was worth the money alone and still haven’t wiped the grin off my face (apart from when the windscreen wipers stopped working mid-downpour!).

She’s a Maldive blue, 3.0 auto, with black leather, 94k with full service history. I know lots here don’t like the autos, but it’s what I’m used to now and I find the Z4 automatic box great. Plus it had the added bonus of my missus saying ‘I won’t be driving it if you buy an automatic...’ :D

I think it’s a nice spec, with heated electric memory seats, xenons, cruise control, folding mirrors and a couple of other bits. Been garaged a lot of it’s life, so in really good condition, bar a few minor dings and scuffs that I plan to sort out. I’ve not seen too many around in Maldive blue either.

Had it around a week and so far I’ve fitted a GROM bluetooth unit and given it a proper clean - snowfoam, decontaminate, clay, machine polish and protect. Sorted out the misty headlights too - pics below are before and after. Ive also changed the number plates for ‘North Oxford BMW’ plates, just because :) Got a couple of missing screw covers on the way, as they were annoying me, a new high-level brake light and bonnet badge... as the ‘ultra delicate’ masking tape I used, took off the W when I removed it after polishing :?

I intend to keep her as OEM as possible and just in the best condition I possibly can. May get the roof motor relocated to the boot though!

I’ve not seen many others Z4’s around Oxford way yet, so if you see me give a wave!

Cheers, Tony

Welcome to the exclusive Maldives blue club Tony, nice looking car I have to say. Great pictures  :D

Welcome to the forum Tony.

It looks like you have found a smart Z4 with a good spec, and putting photos in your first post is always popular.

A great birthday present to yourself too - I was much older before I bought one and realised what I had been missing!

Thank you, I get a little snap-happy once I’ve gone to town on a cleaning session!

Haha, I’ve learned the ‘no photo’ lesson from other forums I’ve been on :D

Thank you for the link, I feel privileged now and glad I held out for the right colour! When I picked my new plates up today, the workshop manager came out to look at the Z4. Was quite chuffed that he was complimenting my car, while surrounded by BMW’s worth 10 times the price 8)

Lovely looking car. I’m an automatic fan too. Welcome to the Forum..

Mazel tov! Welcome to the z4 bug.
Looks like you got a beauty there. That was my first zed too (although mine was black).
I’m on my 4th now.
Started with 3.0i kept getting newer ones.

A tidy looking Z4 you found there. 8) Enjoy the official start of your mid life crisis. :D

Myself and I would expect many, bought my first sports car for my 40th. That was almost 20 years ago though. Good to see not much has changed on some things in life. :driving:

Thanks again for the welcome!

On my days off I plan to remove the seats and give them a good going over with some dodo juice leather restorer. While they’re out, I’ve borrowed my Mum’s bissell spot clean pro carpet cleaner, to go over the whole cabin :D

New brake light arrived today and picked up my bonnet badge from BMW. £42 and you don’t even get the fecking screws for the back!!! :x

If anyone has some style 107 elipsoids going spare, let me know. Did I mention it’s my birthday soon... :P

There are self-tapping nuts on the old bonnet badge that ought to work on the new one - they did when I changed mine. You can get to them by popping the kidney grilles out (pull up at the top then pull the bottom forwards).

And Happy Birthday - in case we forget!

I couldn’t get the old nuts to undo, they just span without unscrewing. I had to snap the plastic pegs to get the badge out.

Found some new ones on ebay for £4, so not the end of the world. Typical BMW that you have to buy everything separate, I should know by now!
