4 out of 5 1 Series owners not that bright or don't care?

Elite
UK magazine Autocar reports based on a BMW survey revealed recently by BMW’s CEO Norbert Reithofer that four out of five BMW 1-series drivers think their car is front-wheel drive. :?

Sounds a bit too co-incidental that BMW release a survey like that just as they propose front wheel drive platforms...

Thought that myself!

But I wonder in the market of the 1 Series if the "Ultimate Driving Machine" with 50/50 weight distribution and rear wheel drive tag really matters? I know it doesn't to a couple of guys who have 1 Series at work (own cars, not company cars).

I'm sure it doesn't matter at all to the majority of people. For sure on a Z4 it would be an odd thing to have a front wheel drive roadster

Even performance wise I'm not so sure these days. Touring cars are a happy mix and on road cars Ford and others produce some hairy front wheelers.

More in the mind of purists I feel and certains types of performance car

It seems a little bogus to me that anyone could drive one for more than 5 minutes and not know.....

I read the linked article, picked up this little gem:

WoooooooooooooooooooW

how stupid are these people

and to think they drove them with confidence in winter. Some people really shouldn’t be able to drive cars.

Why Not? How many people realise that almost all cars were rear wheel drive until about 40 yrs ago. Winter didn't start then !! It was always around, every year. Especially where I live  We had an ample supply of sandbags in the trunk for weight,
we put studded tires on the car and drove like it was summer, it wasn't until the Civic came along that anyone saw the advantage of FWD due to the weight distribution.

I think on anything other than a 123d or 130/135 then it wouldn't matter whether it was FWD or not. Definitely once you get into the higher power/torque bands then you need AWD or RWD.

I beg to differ. I have a 118d and it is all the better for being RWD; 230lbft through the front wheels in the wet? A golf diesel sits there and spins its drive wheels in first. Let's not even discuss understeer!

Plus, sideways is not a problem. Easy to drift in the dry without DSC on. It still has 230lbft of torque, which breaks traction quite easily at certain slip angles.

It also does this which our Z's could never ever achieve:

Which after a few miles later peaked at this:

I can get my fuel use gauge to show 66 or 99.9 mpg dead easy, I have to go down a hill to do it

of course if that's the avg mpg I'm impressed .

It is the average, I took a series of pics over the three hour journey (but I guess I could have just pressed reset each time). Look at the difference in mileage, time on the clock and fuel gauge. Should give you a feel for whether I am being honest ;)

It 'advises' what gear to be in for economy.

It doesn't like 6th below about 52mph...I lifted off to take the pic at that point.

I mean...I lifted off so my passenger could take the pic. Thats what I meant ;)

:D I thought it would be happy in 6th at 1250rpm? Pretty sure mine is happy in 6th @ 30ish mph doing just over 1000 rpm and she doesn't tell me to change down into 5th. You've got me thinking now - will need to check in the morning!

Do the new Z's have the gear indicator then? I didnt know that.

The gearing will be different between the cars, that is for sure.

Mine will pull along at tickover in 6th, at about 800rpm/37mph. Whether it is economical or not I don't know. The turbo wastes energy spooling up below a certain RPM I presume.

It was a really relaxing drive too. At first it seemed dead slow, too slow. Then I kind of got into the 50-60 MPH zone and seemed to really enjoy chilling out and listening to some music.

Yeah sorry I shouldn't have said it doesn't matter, RWD is definitely preferable - we agree. But it isn't a necessity, I have had a couple of VAG TDI 130s with similar torque figures and they were fine.

But a 123d or 35i with 295-300lb ft is a big difference.

E89 has shift indicator though mine doesn't work as it realizes when yer foots planted yer ignoring it :D

Maybe I got a bit defensive though! You do when you have the BMW people think you purchased because you can't afford a bigger/better model

Like a Z4(M)...

ETA: I had the TDI130 in a Fabia. Good engine, just a bit hard to get the power down and car was a little nose heavy.

Wouldn't worry about that, I've got a 1.2 Micra

Yeah I loved the 130 engine, I suppose at the time it was really great. A11y had the 160 TDI in an Ibiza, I took one out for a spin a couple of times, that was a great car too.
