4 cylinder turbo 2.0l vs 6 cylinder 2.5l - Should I buy a Z4 E89 28i or 23i ?

the same competent driver [with] the re-mapped N20 would just scoot off into the distance…

You won’t find many of those hares in these meadows.

Something we can all agree on, people spend a lot of money on vehicle upgrades, very few spend money upgrading themselves.

Some of the best money I’ve spent is on driving tuition, and I don’t mean to pass my driving test

I took my my 12 year old on his first rally driving experience day last week, start them young. He loved it, thrashing around in an old Citroen Saxo

Brilliant. What a treat. Good for you. I bet he can brake with the left foot. :P

It would be interesting to put the two cars to a drag race and see exactly what the difference is between a 30i and a chipped 20i. 20i might be a tad quicker but shouldn't think by much, trade off is the fantastic soundtrack and silky smoothness. As the bloke says in the Highpeak video 6 cylinders just feels more special and substantial.
The differences in bhp figures, acceleration times, etc are totally irrelevant on a daily basis, though.
A re-mapped N20 is ALL about the extra torque IMO. It transforms the car into a very easy thing to drive quickly, or slowly. The twin scroll single turbo spools up almost instantly and you have boatloads of torque everywhere from 1500rpm in any gear. Makes the engine 'feel' much bigger than it is.

Absolutely, I’m running 450Nm of torque which is the same as a stock 35iS which makes overtaking so effortless and fun. I was underwhelmed with the performance of my stock 20i and now with a stage 2 remap performs really well but still lacks the sound, looks and handling of my previous 3.0se E85 Z4.

All true, which makes your choice of a turbo’d type R perfect for what you want. I’d bet you could have just as much fun in an original integra type R though. … but you’d have to be ‘in the mood for it’ and ‘wringing it’s neck’ …9k rpm sure is fun, but you have to work for it!

I’ve found the B12 kit has made a significant improvement over the previous adaptive suspension, still not quite as raw as the E85 experience though, but horses for courses and good all round compromise

Installed the B12 kit a couple of years ago and definitely improved the handling and ride. Had my E85 for the best part of 7 years and really loved that car. Very tempted to replace my E89 with a Z4m roadster (or a Porsche!).
