my z4 third brake light is broken on the left and right side ends. i bought the car like this and i looked it up it said the springs are the problem. some people said BMW did not take responsibility for fixing it and others said they fixed it free and fast.
i called my BMW and they told me i need to bring in the car and they will keep it for 4-5 hours to look up the problem and another few hours to start on it....i dunno if theyre super busy or super lazy. either way, i wanted to see if i can do it myself because my z4 is my daily driver. i remember reading that the springs are the problem cause they cause too much tension on the light, its a 2003 2.5i convertible, what kinda springs will i need to get ? any tips to clarify to BMW its their responsibility ?

Easy to fix and will take 10 mins at most to put a new unit in. You will need an 8mm 'long' socket to engage the securing bolts. Buy a new rear brake light and don't over tighten the bolts.

I had this with mine. I fitted a new one a few weeks ago. Very simple job, I used the same springs just didn't tighten them up as much.

There was a recall years ago. I think they changed the springs. As others have said, too much tension is the problem.

ok, so i can use the same springs but go easy on them. sounds good. i already got got a brake light, a clear one :) probably compliments the car grey color more. thanks guys. its good enough to know i can use the same springs but less tension. drive safe

My 3rd brake light was cracked, and I got the stealership to change it under the factory warranty. No charge.

You can buy new springs that are not as tension, I have the p/n at home somewhere - I replaced them and had new washers when I replaced the brake light - there's a PDF of the recall with instructions and p/n's somewhere :)
