3L engine upgrade?

However if i did get a 3L upgrade i would fully power her up making her alot quicker, or maybe machine monkey can think something up as i know he wants to swap his engine with a V10 next year :o[/quote]

I would be glad to help Jonny. If I can save the cash yes I am something something for next year. Weather that's a v10 v8 or a DIY supercharge project to mine depends on cash. If I do a engine swap mine is going to be available and the diff as well. I am happy to help but as I said before I am not a pro. I wouldn't be able to offer an guarantee.

If I do the supercharger route Jonny and you source an engine. We could spread the development costs. I need to chat to some people on hear who know a bit about such things Beedub and the like. But I am hoping to do it all for less than 2k and around 300bhp.

A fun project but a serious waste of money

Whose going to buy the leftover 2.0ltr engine?

As detailed above, I would go for a low mileage ///M if you want more power, trading in your 2.0ltr if you can

Jonny, I have very special memories of my MK2 16v Golf GTi & still rate it in terms of handling in any road condition as one of the most predictable at the limit I've ever driven - it also experienced the road test of a couple of wild chics that to this day stays between them, me & that car. I had VR6 plans & all sorts for that car over the 8 years of ownership, never wanted to sell but looking back was the best thing I did.

It's like the first woman you loved & lost... until you move on you'll never appreciate what other delights life has in store

Supercharge it. The car will still be yours, even the engine. Upgrade the bits you need to and you're sorted.

Or get over the 'its my car and had it from new' thinking (I know, it's special, but as Jem says moving on can be good) and buy an ///M. Which you can then mod the hell out of and make your own. Get it resprayed so the paint is fresh, sort wheels, get a professional to fix any interior issues and then get on with driving it.

Why simply replace an ordinary engine with a slightly bigger ordinary engine ?

As it stands your car is tastefully modified, its in perfect condition, FSH history and very desirable. One of the best looking cars on this forum. If you decided to sell, you'd have a que of people wanting to buy this car from you.
However, once you start messing around with the mechanics, you'll devalue the car. You won't get back your investment. There's no way I'd buy a car thats had an engine transplant. I'd have all sorts of problems taking it to BMW for servicing, even a good independent.
I've been through this in the past with a few cars in the past, I put a V6 in my 2.0 VW Corrado. It became a nightmare to sell.
If people want a 3.0 Z4, they'll buy one that came from the factory thats been built by BMW, not in a back street garage with an engine with no clear history and probably from a car thats been in an accident.

If you intend to keep the car for many years to come, then throw money at it and enjoy. After 200 + cars I've owned, I know at some point your eye will look at something else and you'll look at the huge pile of money you've spent that you can never recover. The money you're looking to spend + the value of the current car, you're on your way to owning a decent E89 with the 3.0L engine you want.

Jonny, from all the comments, including some valid new ones from a fellow johnnnnnnyy, think your choice falls from the suggestions into two camps.

1. Do something wild with a M5 V8 - spend lots of money (it's not just the engine) ... more than a //M will cost & at the end of it be prepared to take a big financial loss.

2. Buy a //M - will cost you less in the makeover, less to insure; don't have to wait for the build; likely to appreciate in value if you get the right one in the knowledge that it has to be something pretty special to beat a 5 second car

Only you can make the choice from the heart (option 1) or the head (option 2)

Good luck... I know what I would do

Jonny I saw your car in Essex and as others have said Its a great looking zed and would be snapped up instantly.

What's got you thinking you need 3.0 yours is pretty quick you kept up with all of us didn't you.

Rather than thinking bigger engine what about using the money towards track days in your zed and advanced driving lessons

To really see what you can achieve you'll certainly be quick round corners

That's my opinion

Luke has some good points there. Quickest way for all of us to make our cars faster is to improve our skill level. I know fr a fact I can't drive mine anywhere near the limit.

And most of your mods mr Essex have been or looks rather than speed. Like others have said enjoy the car as is. Or look at engine mods to yours. Change the engine change the heart of your car. I am ure if you spent the cash wisely you could get 300 + Bhp by adding a turbo intercooler???

Do not do a 3.0si engine. They are light and help with handling. But they cannot be modded for any kind of power. The mix of mag inner block, alu outer. And alu head bolts. One can't increase cylinder pressure without the head bolts failing. Anything other than the alu bolts will set up galvanic corrosion.

I think you could move the 2.0 to the super 7 kit build crowd. Of course you can get big power out of a four pot BMW engine. Remember the F1 BMW four. 1500 HP.

Why not simply buy a 3.0 in the same colour as yours and then swap all your good parts over so it looks exactly the same?
It will be much more reliable. Furthermore, putting a non-original engine in your car will make your car lose a lot in value!
Get a silver 3.0, swap your parts and sell the 2.0. Trust me, you won't regret it.
