37.4mpg - guess the average speed

Sun blazing and a lovely blue sky so we headed out (as we always seem to) into the lanes of Northumberland.

How many times have we said to each other 'How lucky are we living here. . ' when out in the Zed. We just find more and more lovely quiet places and roads.

But very, very relaxed today - tootling about exploring and seeing where the road takes us. All in high gears and only very occasionally using the Zed's performance - hence 37.4mpg!

Does your wife not get sick of you being together in the car so often?

What's it like to own a car that can achieve that kind of MPG :?

Looks like a great day out, very jealous :driving:

Ha, not quite our favourite shared activity but it's what we both enjoy very much indeed and yes, it does call for us spending a lot of time together - that's something we love as well!

Well you had one Ruth - your 3.0si Coupe  Quite staggering actually (and not realistic (and never before achieved) but for this very, very relaxed day) and It's a bit concerning - especially when considering an ///M. . . . .

It's also incredibly controlling because you can't let that throttle waver much at all to achieve these figures - get to see the world rather than just concentrating on the road but you've got to be in the right frame of mind and on the right roads with no traffic to take into account - today's conditions.

Some good looking roads Paul :driving:

Most of them a bit restrictive to attempt at any spirited driving but one or two sections today looked promising for the future.

My guess a constant 56mph

Probably less - some sections at a very steady 40 to 55 in 6th, feathering the throttle, then the rest even slower in the highest gear the Zed would take - took effort and massive restraint and you need to be in a totally different mind set with little traffic to take into consideration - which was today. Very different!

Haven't got a clue, but guess 45mph

I reckon you're probably right - though the average might have been even less! :D

The M can get close when you want it to Paul  i had to take it 40 miles today for a onceover/chat/meet with BCS exhausts in St Helens , , not a hoon on M65 / M6 so i zero'd trip as i approached the slip road & set the cruise control at 72
, , 34.5mpg when i pulled off the M6 38 miles later

Those are nice clear roads.
Remember it's not mpg that counts, it's spm. Smiles per miles. :D

You're right Brian - it's worth every penny on the right road.

(Smiles per miles - that's exactly what my independent said when I commented on low 20s during spirited driving. He also said, if you want the performance it costs :D ).

:driving:

Getting high(er) MPG is fairly easy if you take it easy, but where's the fun in that? I'm not sure what I've managed in my Z4 as I never really reset any of the counters, it's sitting on 23.1 long term though which is fine really :)

I have my other car set to show me the average for that trip, and once I got this, which was so shocking I got a picture taken :P (ignore the splatter from a fizzy drink on the screen, it has been cleaned)

I never have and probably never will achieve such an economical mpg figure as that. :fuelfire: good effort! And great pictures!

Err, not in my Zed it's not! But we had a lovely run out thank you and thoroughly enjoyed a different kind of run, for us :D

Yep, I've resigned myself to low 20s when out on a normal hoon but it's amazing to see what can be done, if needed.

We do reset our counters a lot as we're always out checking roads for our Newcastle hoons. :)

My M is the more economical of my cars :o It's amazing what you can get used to :P Long term average of 23.1 in the M, 18-19 average in my XFR.

Crikey - another reason to get an ///M  XFR - lovely but not with petrol likely to go up in price

There are worse ways to spend money and I just wanted to live with a nice V8 for a while before they all die out tbh, I'd have regretted it if I didn't :)

As long as you're prepared for it though, fuel costs at a combined 20mpg aren't too crazy, it's only around £1700/year more for 15k miles than if I averaged 35, which is about as good as I'd expect in anything with my usage. I averaged 33 and then 27.5 in my last 2 diesel saloons. I think the experience of driving these cars is well worth the extra cost
