35is - possibly smallest problem ever....

Can't help wondering if it's window related Andy, if the window is not quite sealed against the rubber but as the speed rises the outside air pressure pushes the glass in sealing it. Just a thought.

I'd experiment with this - dropping the window a tiny fraction to see if the noise is affected. Would fit with only hearing it when sat upright. If so then it's rubber seal conditioning time or even replacement?

Hope you get to the bottom of this - I can imagine it is the type of thing which will drive you nuts! Turn the music up?!

:driving:

I can confirm that Steel Panther cures the issue. However as much as I love to listen to them.... there are also many times I wish to cruise along just enjoying the ambience of the cockpit and the noises that come from the engine and exhaust.

By sheer fluke I've just noticed a thread on the comprehensive problem list Andy, last post but one, chap has a faint whirring from the rear end, says it's fuel pump and a dealer mechanic says it's an atmospheric problem.

Could be the fuel pump if it's coming from behind.

Is it quite high pitched and slightly fluctuating? Almost like interference from an electric motor?

That's my bet as well - I've been there and it was very difficult to pinpoint. Temperature and fuel levels had an effect.
The fuel pump was replaced and hey presto - no noise!

Yesterday evening I took her out for a 30 mile round trip, being careful of damp slippery roads.

As it was a little later at night there was reduced traffic and therefore less crawling along at low speeds, I couldn't really hear it as obviously as at the weekend. It was there occasionally, but not as bad or obtrusive.

Windows up / slightly down made no difference. Fuel tank is now just under half, but it's not getting any louder than when that was 3/4. Again I proved that if I lean forward (towards the central air vents) I can't hear it at all.

Will continue to monitor.

I have the same noise. It doesn't bother me because I either have music on or the car turned into sport so the revs are kept high.

I had my fuel pump replaced (both LPFP and HPFP) and the noise is still there. Don't bet on a replacement fixing it.

Hi Guys,

For once i may be able to help. Picked up a new 35is last September. Drove for the first few weeks with a faint squeak. coming from around the back of the car.

Parked up and opened the boot, and started pushing down on the boot. Sure enough squeak squeak. Thought it was suspension and transport blocks left in etc.

Took it to the dealer, who said they could hear it but couldn't locate it and that they had checked all over and all was fine. I still was not happy 50k car and 150 miles on and squeaks.

One sunday i got that fed up with it and grabbed some GT85 lube spray that we use on bikes etc. Got under the back of the car and sprayed all the mounts and bushes for the rear arms to exhaust mounts etc.

Went for a drive and GONE, no squeaks no noises. Now drove 1500 miles not a single note. Told Dealer when i was last in there and they said "we should have thought of that". Lube solves a lot of squeaks lol.

I thought that it might of needed doing every so and so due to winter and water washing the lube away, but so far so good. Give it a try you never know.

Been out again tonight. Normal driving. Not thinking about the tiny noise. Never heard anything abnormal. Although the stereo was on part of the way.

I am discovering again just how good the z4 is and why I went for another one.

Any noise ie squeaks and rattles roof on, seem to go away when it's down!

On holiday in Germany I can't even hear the radio at 130+ :D
