35is hit 1200 miles today- some tips please!

Finally hit 1200 miles today after conservative driving (well, most of the time) and itching to unleash some of the raw power of this engine. Must admit I am apprehensive about the 'launch control' sequence which looks like fun but would appear to leave me in a cloud of dust while I'm setting it up. Anyone done this?

Few things I have seen during this acclimatisation phase is that comfort mode and conservative'ish driving gives fairly good fuel economy but above this can make the oil refineries rather happy. I do think higher RON fuel seems to give more MPG. Forgive if this is a well known fact- I'm new to this game.

The only thing I would change apart from the spaghetti twist aerial supplied is the main light beam colour temperature. I am not sure of the exact colour of the OEM xenons but estimate these to be around 4500K which in the much more icy white angel eyes looks a little out of touch for me on a steely mineral grey car (others may well disagree).

So, I did floor the accelerator after hitting 1200 miles tonight on the M25........ the hitherto unknown hairpiece did slip :) ! Extremely impressive 30 to !**mph. The engine growl was to die for. Haven't tried 'sport plus' mode yet.

So any advice on launch control, driving modes, changing to 'icy' lights?

As always, indebted for any advice.

Cheers! :D :D :D

Nice one on reaching 1200 miles! I got my 35i (slightly inferior  ) at the end of October and have done about 1600 miles. On reaching 1200 I just started to increase the revs a bit past 4500rpm. Haven't floored it as yet but it's pretty damn fast without, in Sport and Sport+ it's crazy! (I believe the only difference between Sport and + is less nannying from the car to let you "hang it out" a bit more. I'm also addicted to the noise, especially the burble on the overrun. I've only run it on 99 RON so can't comment on a difference in MPG.
I can't comment on Launch control either because I have a manual :o . I would imagine changing the light colour is as simple as a bulb change. Having said that, not sure how easy it will be.
Glad you're loving the car!
I have a question for you, when you unlock the car how loud is the fuel pump when it primes? Also, can you hear it running behind you when the car is at idle?

Cheers

How anyone can have the patience to wait 1200 miles is truly remarkable in my opinion

Wait till she's warm and thrash the hell out if her :driving:

Not advice...just what entered my head

Agree - Sport+ and floor it

As ever, google search is your friend on the Xenons topic ( http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=355333 ). It seems they're accessible from the bulb panel in the front wheel arch. I've accessed this to change my indicators to LED and its very simple to do, turn the wheel, detach the panel in the arch liner, access the bulbs.

As for launch control, I'd perhaps give it a bit more time/miles. It puts full load through the transmission system and while impressive, is really a party trick and a) its not the weather for it plus b) the components are probably not quite ready at just 1200 miles. You can end up with slight glazing on clutch packs introducing minor wobbles and vibrations, let the clutches wear in a bit more would be my suggestion. Of course feel free to ignore that if you want lol

Normal/Sport/Sport + (DDC) doesn't make any difference to power output. Full pedal is full pedal (kick down). The only difference DDC makes is steering feel, suspension stiffness, gearbox shift points and in + it allows some slip at the rear.

You know what, I was kind of hoping someone would say this  !! Thanks for all the great advice. Really enjoying the engine and handling. What a cracker! Off to acquire some 6000K xenons, the 'icing' on the cake. :)

Have just reached 1,800mls with my 35i manual as said the noise is addictive, have floored it once nearly scared the pants off the wife it is FAST  only downside have just had the fuel pump replaced could hear it running on tickover particularly when full of petrol hopeing the issue is now sorted.Don't notice so much difference from comfort to sport mode as I did with the 23i just steering really also front end feels a little light when you really floor it but all in all I love it. :driving:

Have reached 2600 miles on my 35is now and even though it's cold outside I can't stop having my window down to listen to the 'burble' as I accelerate and lift off :D

Hmmmm.... interesting question about the fuel pump. From cold, it seems more noticeable but I wouldn't say it is loud. I guess I would call it a gentle 'whirr'. I must admit I don't think I can hear it when the car is idling. May I ask why you ask this? I notice another poster on this thread mentions the fuel pump needed replacing.

One thing I have noticed is that on initial start from cold most of the exhaust gas exits through the passenger side pipe. About 60 sec later there is a 'click' and the other pipe fully opens- guessing this is normal and probably very well known!

:D LOL :D Dread to think what happens when she's cold!!

Another question. What is the specification of the main beam xenon? Are they 35W D1S? Thanks as always :)

It's mainly because when I unlock the car, if it primes (sometimes less than 1 second, sometimes more like 4) it's pretty loud, although this is standing outside the car. Once the car is running, you can only hear it if you're listening at idle and it makes a whir combined with a small intermittent scratching sound. Just seemed louder than any other car I've owned when priming, that's all.

I'll go out and have a look at cold start condensation and report back!

Yes the click from the exhaust is for noise pollution control, perfectly normal. Its a flap that closes at startup and in certain conditions to keep the noise from the exhaust from being too boomy, like at startup or during motorway journeys. The flap partially blocks the drivers side exhaust and pushes the gasses through an extra part of the silencer on that side, hence why you see less steam. You can see it by looking underneath.

Couldn't get any condensation on start up this morning, air was too dry methinks. But Maniacs answer is what you were looking for!
Maniac, how much noise does your fuel pump make when it primes out of interest...

You mean, you unlock, you get 3 seconds or so of 'eeeeeeeeez' noise. I've never noticed any pump noise when started, try hearing it over the exhaust!

As Maniac say's can't hear now't over exhausts! But have never heard the pump when unlocking.

My wife moans like hell coz I insist on driving with the window open, now't to do the sound of that exhaust of course!

With current weather noticing the TC kicking in more often now.

That's it, just seemed quite noisy for a luxury car 'tis all. I suppose it's closer to the "business end" than in most cars due to the rearward seating in relation to the rest of the car.

Mine was yesterday on a run out. Until I went for Sport + mode and some roundabout sliding

Thank you so much for all this information. One last question- the main headlamp bulbs (dipped beam)- are they D1S or D2S? Do BMW use Philips for their OEM bulbs or Bosch or another company?? Very keen to ice up to 6000K bulbs.

Cheers :D

Sorry to bump this thread up

I have had a good google search for 2013 E89 dipped beam bulb/headlamp specification and don't seem to be getting much convincing information. Are the dipped xenons D1S or D2S? Does anyone know what BMW use as there OEM bulb company?

Sorry to ask again but wanting to go ice white (for Xmas!) :D
