35iS cheaper to insure than a 30i!!

As a few of you will know, last week i upgraded from a sdrive 30i to a 35iS.

Just before i decided to put pen to paper i checked on a comparison site how much extra the 35iS would be to insure.
I was amazed when the quotes were coming out over £100 less than what i paid on the 30i when i renewed last December. The cheapest quote being £392! :o

Then when a called my current insurer with the new vehicle details they said it would cost an extra £8 over my current premium, but with the admin charge being £15 my premium effectively came down! :?

Obviously im not complaining, but somewhat surprised to say the least!

Hi Steve,

I'm thinking about getting an E89 Z4. Any chance you could give me your thoughts on the difference in power (and handling if there are chassis changes) between the 30i and 35iS please? I don't suppose you tried a 35i before getting the iS.

Thanks

Pav

The 35iS is a totally different beast to the 30i in terms of raw performance. This has the same engine that is in the 1M Coupe, so it is seriously quick. The torque overboost means there's strong performance throughout the rev range, mid range pull is very impressive whatever gear you are in. And as it has the DCT box it makes for pretty rapid progress. :driving:

The most surprising part for me though is the ride. it feels no firmer than in the 30i. I was expecting a much stiffer set up, it maybe down to the adaptive suspension. I know the suspension lowers by 10mm when you are pressing on around the twisty stuff, but ive not really tested this as yet.

Just goes to show how flawed the insurance pricing structures are, based on statistics etc.

Perhaps in your case, there are more claims for 30i cars than 35is cars, meaning they see the 35is as less of a risk?

When my wife and I briefly swapped our 1'ers earlier in the year before we traded for the Z4, my insurance went UP...despite me taking on an older, less specced car and her taking on a newer higher spec car.

I think the moral of your story is to definitely swap insurers next year.....other quotes over £100 cheaper, your current insurer £8 more.....

Sure is baffling :?

The £100 cheaper quotes were based on a typical years cover. As im half way through the current term with my existing insurer it makes sense to stay put until renewal.

Actually it's permanently 10mm lower. Adaptive suspension has damper control only, it doesn't have ride height adjustment.

Had the same when I upgrades from 2.5si to the ///M. Insurance premium dropped by £100 to £370.

Both prices with the same company.

makes no sense

insurance is a rip off, i hate it all insurance companies with a passion

That's what I was thinking as I read it. Maybe (stereotyping for a second) people who are willing to splash out on the 35is and pay the extra running costs are more likely to be doing it because they love their car and driving it - so will look after it. Smaller engines are more likely to be bought by those who want something to go from A-B looking as flashy as they can do and don't care much for driving or looking after the car. (It's a stereotype - please no E89 owners take offence!!!). Hence more claims on 3.0i's?
As said it's all about statistics. Last time we moved house my car insurance came down, yet my wife's went up for the exact same change to the policy. Annoyed me somewhat at the time.

And there's me complaining my insurance has gone slightly up this year to £268 fc on E89 35i! :P

I was suprised that the insurance quote I had when changing from my old 3.0si Coupe Z4 to the 35i was slightly cheaper for the 35i!

I would have guessed it would be more like the 35is being a fairly rare beast with that meaning there is less chance of one being bent as there arn't so many.
Wouldn't have thought the your argument about 35is drivers being more careful has much weight with an insurance company as we are all at risk of being t boned by a uninsured drunk driver no matter how carful you are.

The 330D convertable was about £125 cheaper to insure than the A3 quattro I bought...

Explanation was quotes are based upon claims, where statistically there had been far more thefts & crashes in A3's than with the 330DC, so anyone buying one was considered a much lower risk.

Therefore, it's likely those buying the 35iS have had far fewer incidents than those owning the 30i...
