35i winter wheels from BMW !!

I have been speaking to BMW about winter wheels this morning, my local dealership first quoted just over £1400, but then on the second call said that the computer system said not to sell the initial tyres to 35i owners as the tyres are not the proper rating for the car. They were quoting for 17" alloys, 225's i think and i can't remember now which make of tyre, but the correct rated tyres and wheels worked out at £1640 !!
Wondermike kindly made some suggestions in another thread about winter tyres, i just wondered if anyone else has come across this issue with tyre ratings ? If so what tyres did you go for?

Is it 19"s that you have on the Zed at the moment?

I think in our case we would need to drop down to 17" wheels with 225/45 tyres.

PawnSacrifice has a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on 17s (225s).

A set of 17" wheels and tyres for £1,640. I think it is reasonable. 4 Bridgestone RF tyres (18") is about £850.

Nooooo - I think that's far too much. 4 x 17" winter tyres are around £400 and a set of 4 alloys (I wouldn't be fussed about whether they are BMW alloys) are surely only a couple of hundred? Fitting can't be too expensive :?

I'm sure it can be done for a lot less than £1640

Only have 18"s on at the moment. Thanks for the heads up on the dunlops.

Wondermike suggested 17"s and around £400 for tyres too. I didn't think £1640 was terrible since replacing my rear two tyres recently came to about £490 and it should have included storage (interestingly BMW said their storage was filled and they would deliver the old wheels to me or wherever i wanted them to go)

Has anyone else come up with this issue of the tyre ratings matching the car? In my mind i wasn't imagining it would be a problem, speed limit 70mph so why the fuss. Where would the insurance company stand if there was an accident and i had tyres on that weren't correctly rated according to BMW?

The more i go round on this one the more inclined i am to park the zed up for the snowy days and use another vehicle. I'm chasing to get my series II landy on the road, probably will be late january now but, seeing as i can't get the BMW wheels till 10th jan i think i may just stick it out and then use the landy when roads are impassable. It will cost me less than £1600 to have the landy running and i need her for getting firewood anyway (no more chainsaw in the back of the Zed you'll be pleased to know), plus the landy is tax exempt and cheap to insure. It'll be rough motoring but the part of me that longs for an old classic convertible may just be slightly appeased bouncing around in a rattly unreliable and freezing cold landrover.

I know there is the argument that winter tyres save wear and tear and if i hunt around i can probably save money but i have no where to store the extra wheels safely and if i start paying for storage it is just more cost added, i am not a great one for spending time hunting road comparing prices and so i think i have made my mind up. If i didn't have the landy in the wings i'd be making a different choice though.

But they are OEM wheels (say £250 each) and premium winter tyres, then £1,640 is fair price.

Tyres definitely for 400, that's for Avon which is a pretty decent brand if not in the "premier league" of tyres. They were more than adequate on my SLK last year.

Wheels will be max 150 each for non-BMW rims. So a grand tops. And worth it if it keeps you mobile.

Also don't worry about the speed rating. On my SLK you were actually able to set a reduced max speed using the on board computer, and to take account of winter tyres. From memory, H rated tyres are still good for up to 130 mph.

Thanks, it seemed a little off that BMW made such an issue of the rating although i fully understand their situation. Sell tyres to someone who then goes blasting down an autobahn when the weather's better and blows out at high speed !! not good for the tyre vendor.

The landy will stand me in for about £1250 total by the time she's running so not a bad compromise. I think i'll be saving some sheckels for tyres in the future, possibly for next winter. Have been haemorrhaging cash recently on various things and have an extension to build so that £1,000 for the zed will have to wait, after all even with winter tyres on it'll be a pain trying to get 10 ton of timber out of the woods in a zed 4 :-)

Thanks for all the good advice :-)
