35i owners - input wanted

All in all, my 35is has been reliable. In a little over 2 1/2 years of ownership, it never left me stranded. Other than driver error.

A piece of advice is to keep your battery in good shape, never let it get old. E89s electronics are very finicky.

Turning it off and on again rarely works with car faults, though, IME. :D

A chum has a saying, ‘anecdote isn’t the plural of data.’ Your data point is important. But the stories told here, assuming they’re all true, are the other data points.

I’m with B21. If you don’t have a couple of grand for unexpected repairs, a 35i or 35is isn’t for you. There are other e89s, though.

Any car can be expensive to repair. I have had cars far cheaper and less complex than a 35is which have cost considerably more in garage bills. I am a pensioner and not a rich one but if I went back to an e89, the 35is would be my only choice.

Try a test driving a few e89s and you will see what I mean
 
I've had 2x 35is (same engine as the 35i - slightly more tuned) & both have been impeccable.

Slight gremlins from time to time, but nothing bad & no engine / drivetrain problems at all.

I think going by all the positive posts including yours it only makes me more certain that most of the things you hear are just scare mongering. The same thing happens with the Z4M unfortunately.
 
I dont think it's scare mongering - bad things can go wrong, and this is a complicated high output motor.

It's just that it's not something to worry about day to day - keep it looked after well, and somewhere around 80k miles you might need to change the water pump (likely), if unlucky the HPFP (rarer), and turbo life is similar to any other high output car.

You get what you should expect.
