35i: More noise!

I don't understand what the desire is to make more noise for everything? The young lad over the road has got a diesel 3 series coupe (320d I'm assuming), and has done all sorts to make it louder and, frankly, it just sounds crap.

Looks like you could potentially buy a new 35is rear silencer for $1100, cheaper than most aftermarket systems.

Because a nasty 4 cylinder diesel will always sound crap.

Extracting more noise from a decent sounding engine is a big part of what makes it characterful and engaging to drive.

Case in point: my bosses 911 Turbo is in for a service today and he has a new 718 Boxster S courtesy car. It's a lovely thing, very quick, and with it's new 4 cyl sounds like an absolute turd. Why you'd drop £60k on one over an M2/TT-RS/F-Type/old Cayman is totally beyond me.

Thanks for all the comments and ideas so far - good food for thought!

Id certainly recommend it along with a stage 2 remap, never looked back, except in the rear view mirror

The sleeving of rear cans would cost about £20 and the OP wants more noise not power...............

Like I said previously, the e89's rear cans are double skinned and have an s bend perforated tube. So not as easy as older/simpler cars.

Might also be a bit too loud on the 35i. Sleeving the rear can is the same as removing it.

Want to make it like some chav driving around.
Discussed this today with my business partner, her chap as some top of the range Merc that makes all those noises, both agreed the sort of noise kids like.
Like the F type, what a racket, has a quiet mode so as not to upset neighbours, yet everyone else has to put up with the noise.

There's no pleasing people when it comes to sound, some want more some less I think the 35is is just about right for the type of car it is. The The f-type is way too loud even Jeremy Clarkson complained about it for goodness sake.

There's a fine line between chav noise and good noise.

The N54 can get very raspy if you mess with the rear silencers. I think that's an issue with all BMW i6 engines. Much harder to get a good noise from than an AMG Merc.
